Warnings and safety precautions
Main risks
- Tipping or movement in strong winds if the shed is not properly anchored.
- Cuts and pinches when handling panels, screws/fasteners and hinges.
- Finger entrapment or accidental locking-in from the inside when using doors and windows.
- Partial collapse due to incorrect assembly or overloading of the roof and shelves (e.g. snow or heavy objects).
- Falls when attempting to climb onto or walk on the roof.
- Fire or explosion due to improper storage of fuels, paints or gases and the presence of flames or sparks.
- Inhalation of vapours or oxygen depletion due to insufficient ventilation, especially with stored chemicals.
- Risk of electric shock from using equipment not rated for outdoor use or from extension leads in damp or wet conditions.
Safe use
- Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before assembly and use.
- Assemble on a level, solid base; secure the structure to the ground with the specified anchors.
- Wear gloves, closed-toe footwear and eye protection during assembly; handle parts carefully to avoid cuts.
- Use a stable ladder for work at height from the outside; do not step on the roof.
- Adjust doors and windows so they open and close without sticking; prevent them slamming in the wind by installing retainers where appropriate.
- Distribute the load evenly; observe the stated limits for shelves and hangers; do not hang from the structure.
- Maintain adequate ventilation; do not smoke or light flames inside; keep heat sources away from combustible materials.
- Store chemicals in their original, tightly closed containers and on shelves; keep fuels away from sparks and heat.
- If adding electricity, use equipment specifically rated for outdoor use with appropriate protection; use a qualified electrician for the installation.
- After storms (wind, hail or snow), check anchors, panels/cladding and any damage before entering.
Storage and maintenance
- Keep the perimeter clear to promote ventilation and prevent build-up of leaves and debris.
- Periodically check screws/fasteners, anchors, hinges and seals; re-tighten or replace damaged parts.
- Clean the roof and gutters regularly; remove accumulated snow from the ground using suitable tools.
- Ventilate frequently to reduce condensation and mould; dry any leaks or spills immediately.
- Raise boxes and materials off the floor with shelving; secure shelves where necessary to prevent tipping.
- Protect surfaces as indicated by the manufacturer (wood treatments, anti-corrosion protection on metal, gentle cleaning on resins).
- Check that the base shows no subsidence and that drainage works; avoid standing water around it.
- Inspect the shed after impacts from branches or knocks; repair damage before continuing to use it.
Usage restrictions
- Do not use the shed as living accommodation, a bedroom or for prolonged occupancy.
- Do not allow play, hiding or climbing on the structure; children must be supervised at all times.
- Do not use internal combustion appliances, generators, barbecues or heaters inside.
- Do not store large quantities of fuels, gas cylinders or hazardous substances; keep minimal quantities in a well-ventilated, stable location.
- Do not overload the roof or hang heavy objects from beams or panels; do not walk on the roof.
- Do not block the door with stored items; always keep at least one exit route clear.
- Do not install the shed in areas with an evident risk of flooding or on unstable ground.
- Do not improvise electrical installations or use extension leads on a permanent basis.
