Swimming Pool Heaters
Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Electric shock due to moisture, damaged cables or improper connections in electric models or heat pumps.
- Burns from excessively hot water at the circuit outlet, or from surfaces that become very hot.
- Fire risk or exposure to hazardous gases in gas heaters with insufficient ventilation.
- Overheating or overpressure if the water flow is blocked or valves are closed during operation.
- Leaks and pooling that can cause slips or damage to the surroundings.
- Internal damage due to frost when water remains in the unit at sub-zero temperatures.
- Trips over hoses, cables or external pipework, and falls if solar panels are installed at height.
- Corrosion or accelerated deterioration due to imbalances in pH, salt or pool chemicals.
Safe use
- Install and place the equipment on a stable, level surface, keeping grilles and air inlets/outlets clear.
- Keep electrical connections dry and in good condition; use an RCD-protected, earthed socket. Avoid extension leads and makeshift splices.
- For gas units, use only outdoors or in well-ventilated areas; keep combustible materials away and do not cover the unit while operating.
- Do not start the heater without water circulation, and do not close valves while it is running.
- Adjust the temperature gradually and check that the return water to the pool is not too hot.
- When restarting after prolonged sun exposure (e.g., in solar systems), allow water to run with caution in case very hot water has built up.
- Before moving, cleaning or handling the equipment, switch it off and disconnect it from the mains; shut off the gas or water supply as applicable.
- If the installation requires a fixed electrical connection or gas, have it carried out by qualified personnel in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Keep children and pets away from the operating equipment and hot areas.
Storage and maintenance
- Periodically inspect hoses, joints, clamps and cables; replace damaged or cracked parts.
- Keep grilles and ventilation areas clean; do not allow the build-up of leaves, dust or insects.
- Clean pre-filters or strainers in the circuit to ensure adequate flow and prevent overheating.
- During frosts or prolonged inactivity, drain the water from the unit and the pipework to prevent damage from freezing.
- Store the heater under cover, in a dry, ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and humidity when it will not be used for a prolonged period.
- Avoid harsh cleaning products; follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for descaling or removing limescale.
- Periodically verify the correct operation of protective devices (switches, thermostats, sensors) as indicated by the manufacturer.
- Check for any unusual odours, noises or signs of overheating and stop using the unit if they occur.
Restrictions on use
- Do not use to heat drinking water, showers or other sanitary uses.
- Do not use as a space heater or cover the equipment to 'retain' heat.
- Do not use gas heaters in enclosed spaces, nor obstruct flues or ventilation.
- Do not operate with flow rates or temperatures outside the manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Do not dose pool chemicals through the heater or immediately before its inlet.
- Do not use if there is visible damage, a smell of gas, a burning smell, unusual noises or leaks; shut down the unit and ventilate the area if you detect gas.
- Do not modify cables, connectors, valves, or pipework/ducting, nor bypass safety devices.
- Do not allow the equipment to be used by children or by persons without proper supervision.
- Do not place objects on top of the appliance nor place it near combustible materials.
