Usage Warnings

Pillar Drills

Safety warnings and precautions

Main hazards

  • Entanglement with rotating parts (drill bit, chuck, belts and pulleys) that can catch clothing, hair or jewellery.
  • Flying swarf or fragments that can cause eye injuries and cuts.
  • Sudden rotation of the workpiece if not properly secured, with risk of impact and entrapment.
  • Cuts and punctures when handling drill bits or sharp-edged workpieces.
  • Burns from contact with hot drill bits and swarf after drilling.
  • Noise and vibration that can affect hearing and cause user fatigue.
  • Risk of electric shock from damaged cables, faulty plugs or the presence of moisture.
  • Trapping hazards at the feed levers, the column rack, or when raising/lowering the table.
  • Dropping or shifting of heavy workpieces during setup or drilling.
  • Inhalation of fine dust or coolant mist during prolonged work.

Safe use

  • Place the drill on a stable surface and secure it to the bench or floor where possible.
  • Before use, check that the chuck guard and belt/pulley guards are in place and operational.
  • Disconnect from the mains before changing drill bits, adjusting belts, cleaning or clearing jams.
  • Tighten the drill bit correctly and always remove the chuck key before starting.
  • Select the appropriate drill bit, speed and feed for the material; do not force the machine or the tool.
  • Clamp the workpiece using a drill vice or clamps on the table; do not hold it by hand.
  • Use the depth stop to avoid drilling into the table or going through further than necessary.
  • Keep your hands away from the cutting area and do not attempt to stop the spindle by hand.
  • Remove swarf with a brush or hook; do not clear it with your hands or blow it away.
  • Use lubrication or coolant where appropriate for the material and operation.
  • Wear eye protection; add hearing protection and a dust mask when the job requires it.
  • Wear close-fitting clothing, roll up sleeves and tie back hair; avoid jewellery and do not wear gloves while drilling.
  • If you notice abnormal vibration, a burning smell or misalignment, stop the machine and check before continuing.
  • Wait for a complete stop before measuring, removing the workpiece or making adjustments to the table or chuck.
  • Keep the work area well lit, uncluttered and with the cable routed away from walkways.

Storage and maintenance

  • Disconnect the equipment from the mains before any adjustment, cleaning or maintenance work.
  • Clean the table and surrounding area of swarf after each use; avoid build-up near belts, pulleys and the motor.
  • Periodically check the drill is securely fixed to the bench/floor, and the clamping of the table and column.
  • Inspect the condition of the cable, plug and switches; do not use the drill if they show any damage.
  • Replace drill bits that are worn, bent or have damaged cutting edges; store drill bits in cases to protect the edges.
  • Maintain and lubricate guides and lead screws as per the manufacturer's instructions; protect surfaces against corrosion.
  • Check the condition and tension of the belt; replace it if it shows cracks or fraying.
  • Regularly verify the squareness between the table and the drill bit and adjust if necessary.
  • Cover the machine when not in use and keep accessories and keys in a dry, organised place.
  • If fitted with an emergency stop or safety interlocks, check their correct operation periodically.

Restrictions on use

  • Not suitable for children; keep out of their reach. Must not be used by minors or by persons unfamiliar with the equipment without appropriate supervision.
  • Do not use outdoors or in damp environments, where dripping or splashing may occur.
  • Do not operate near flammable liquids, gases or explosive atmospheres.
  • Do not remove or bypass guards, covers or safety devices.
  • Do not use damaged or incompatible drill bits, chucks or accessories, or those that do not hold securely.
  • Do not use the pillar drill as a lathe, milling machine, grinder or press unless specified by the manufacturer.
  • Do not hold small parts by hand or wear loose gloves while drilling.
  • Do not exceed the drilling capacity, spindle travel or the maximum load of the table.
  • Do not work under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or when severely fatigued.
  • Do not allow multiple people to operate the controls simultaneously, and do not distract the operator during work.
