Safety warnings and precautions

Main hazards

  • Cuts when handling the cutting edges of taps and dies or when removing metal swarf.
  • Ejection of swarf and possible tool fragments due to breakage or jamming.
  • Excessive torque that can snap the tap inside the workpiece and cause hand or wrist injuries.
  • Slippage of the tap wrench or die stock, with a risk of impact injuries to knuckles and hands.
  • Unexpected movement of the workpiece if not securely clamped, with a risk of entrapment.
  • Skin or eye irritation from contact with cutting oils and cleaning agents.
  • Thread damage or joint failure from using an incorrect size or pitch.

Safe use

  • Wear safety glasses and, when handling swarf, close-fitting cut-resistant gloves; avoid loose gloves and wide sleeves near rotating parts.
  • Secure the workpiece firmly in a vice or stable jaws before starting.
  • Check the condition of the tool and select the correct size and pitch; when tapping, drill the recommended tapping drill size as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Start the threading by aligning the tap or die perpendicular to the surface, without forcing the start.
  • Apply a cutting lubricant compatible with the material and periodically back off to clear swarf and prevent jamming.
  • Apply steady, progressive force with the appropriate tap wrench or die stock; if you feel abnormal resistance, stop, back off and clean the area.
  • Do not use makeshift extensions or impact tools; avoid driving taps or dies with powered machines unless they are designed for it.
  • Remove swarf with a brush or magnet; do not pick it up by hand or blow it towards your face.

Storage and maintenance

  • Clean after each use: remove swarf and lubricant residues, and dry thoroughly to prevent corrosion.
  • Apply a light coat of protective oil to the cutting edges and store the set in its case, in a dry, ventilated place.
  • Keep the pieces organised by size and pitch to avoid mix-ups and damage.
  • Inspect periodically for wear, nicks or cracks; replace any tool that is damaged or heavily worn.
  • Check and tighten the clamping screws of tap wrenches and die stocks before each use.
  • Store lubricants sealed and away from heat sources; clean up spills immediately.

Restrictions of use

  • Keep out of the reach of children and not suitable for unsupervised use by persons unfamiliar with the tool.
  • Do not use on materials or diameters that exceed the capacity specified by the manufacturer.
  • Do not use taps or dies with dull, chipped cutting edges or visible deformations.
  • Do not modify the tool or use it as a punch, lever or for any purpose other than threading.
  • Do not work without stable clamping of the workpiece or without eye protection.
  • If a tap breaks inside the workpiece, avoid forcing its removal; clean the area and consider specific extraction methods before continuing.
