Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Finger pinches when opening or closing the jaws and when sliding the slider.
- Minor cuts from sharp jaw edges or from the feeler gauge leaves.
- Measurement errors due to dirt, burrs, hot parts or excessive pressure, which can lead to faulty assemblies.
- Scratching or damaging delicate surfaces if more force than necessary is applied.
- Flying swarf or splinters when measuring freshly machined parts, posing a risk to the eyes.
- On digital models, risks associated with button cells: ingestion by children, leakage, or overheating due to short-circuit.
Safe use
- Before use, check that the calliper is clean, free of play and that the jaws close parallel; set zero as instructed by the manufacturer.
- Clean the workpiece and remove burrs; do not measure moving parts and allow them to cool if hot.
- Apply light, steady pressure when closing; use the locking screw only to hold the reading, without forcing.
- Hold the calliper by the frame and keep fingers clear of the jaws' travel to avoid pinches.
- For depth measurements, seat the base flat and advance without tilting or forcing the rod.
- Wear eye protection when working near swarf, sharp edges or rough surfaces.
- Protect the instrument from knocks, excessive dust and splashes; on digital models, avoid immersion in liquids.
- When changing the battery, use the specified type, observe polarity and keep loose batteries out of the reach of children.
Storage and maintenance
- After each use, wipe with a soft cloth to remove dust, swarf and moisture; on steel models, apply a light film of fine oil to prevent corrosion.
- Store the calliper in its case, with the jaws slightly open, protected from knocks and drops.
- Avoid extreme temperatures, direct sunlight and sudden changes that may affect accuracy.
- Periodically check accuracy with a simple standard; if you detect unstable readings or excessive play, stop using it until it has been inspected.
- Do not use harsh solvents or blow compressed air directly onto the dial or display.
- Replace the battery when necessary and remove it if it will not be used for prolonged periods.
Restrictions on use
- Not a toy: keep out of the reach of children and pets; use under adult supervision in educational activities.
- Do not use as a lever, press, compass, screwdriver or as a cutting or marking tool.
- Do not measure rotating parts or bring the calliper near entrapment hazards.
- Do not force the adjustment to “make the jaws fit”; if it does not fit, use another tool or an appropriate measuring method.
- Do not use the instrument if it is bent, with misaligned jaws, damaged feeler gauge leaves or a cracked display/dial.
- Do not modify or disassemble components of the calliper; this may compromise safety and accuracy.
