Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Cuts, entrapment or amputations from moving tines/blades.
  • Ejection of stones, clods and other objects at high speed.
  • Loss of control or tipping over on uneven ground, with roots or on slopes.
  • Exposure to high noise levels and prolonged vibration.
  • Burns from contact with hot parts on petrol-engine models.
  • Inhalation of exhaust gases and risk of poisoning in poorly ventilated spaces.
  • Electric shock from damaged cables or use in wet conditions on electric models.
  • Fire due to improper fuel handling or overheating.
  • Muscular and back injuries from improper manoeuvring, pushing or transport.

Safe use

  • Wear safety glasses or a face shield, hearing protection, close-fitting work gloves, safety footwear with slip-resistant soles and close-fitting clothing; tie back long hair and avoid loose garments.
  • Keep hands and feet away from the tines; never clear jams with the machine running. Stop the equipment and isolate the power (remove the battery, unplug the mains lead or remove the spark plug cap) before intervening.
  • Inspect the work area and remove stones, wires, irrigation hoses and other objects; identify any possible buried services (cables/pipes) before tilling.
  • Start and operate in clear, firm areas, holding the handlebar with both hands and moving at a controlled pace. Adjust the working depth progressively without forcing the equipment.
  • Keep people and pets at a safe distance (at least 10 m). Never allow anyone to stand in front of the machine.
  • On sloping ground, avoid steep gradients; reduce depth and speed, make wide turns and do not reverse downhill.
  • Electric models: use outdoor-rated extension leads and keep the cable always behind you and away from the tines; avoid working in the rain or on waterlogged ground.
  • Battery models: do not strike or short-circuit the batteries; remove the battery for transport, cleaning or accessory changes; charge in a dry, well-ventilated place.
  • Petrol models: refuel outdoors with the engine off and cool; keep fuel away from sparks and flames; do not smoke while refuelling.
  • If a heavy impact, abnormal vibration, burning smell or loss of power occurs, stop the machine and check before continuing.

Storage and maintenance

  • Clean soil and debris with the machine switched off and disconnected. Avoid directing high-pressure water at electrical components or bearings.
  • Regularly check that screws, guards and shields are present and secure; replace damaged or deformed parts.
  • Inspect the condition of tines and shafts; replace excessively worn parts to maintain control and reduce vibration.
  • Lubricate and adjust tensions (belts/chains) according to the manufacturer's instructions; do not over-tighten.
  • Petrol models: store fuel in a suitable, sealed container, in a ventilated place away from heat sources; if you are not going to use the tiller for a prolonged period, consider emptying the tank and purging the system.
  • Electric and battery models: check cables, plugs and housing; do not use the equipment if there are cuts or cracks. Store the battery and charger in a dry, cool place out of direct sunlight.
  • During storage, protect the tines with a cover and keep the equipment out of reach of children and pets.
  • For transport, switch off and disconnect the machine, protect the tines, secure it to prevent movement and avoid lifting it by the guards.

Restrictions on use

  • Intended for tilling and aerating garden or allotment soil; do not use the tiller to cut wood, crush stones or for other unintended purposes.
  • Do not use the machine indoors, in garages or in enclosed greenhouses with petrol engines running.
  • Do not operate on hard surfaces (asphalt, concrete, rock) or on frozen or very stony ground with the tines engaged.
  • Do not use the tiller when fatigued or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medicines that impair alertness.
  • Do not permit use by minors; operation must be carried out by adults accustomed to garden machinery and capable of controlling the equipment.
  • Do not disable or remove guards, switches or stop devices; do not make modifications or fit accessories not specified by the manufacturer.
  • Do not work with insufficient lighting or during storms, heavy rain or low-visibility conditions.
  • Do not carry people or use the tiller as a towing vehicle.
