Safety warnings and precautions
Main hazards
- Crushing and severe cuts from the splitting wedge and ram during the splitting cycle.
- Projection of chips and wood fragments that may injure eyes and face.
- Sudden ejection of the log or unexpected movement if it is poorly supported.
- Tipping of the machine or loss of stability on uneven surfaces.
- Overexertion and back injuries when lifting and moving heavy logs.
- Contact with hot parts and exposure to exhaust gases on engine-powered models.
- Risk of electric shock and short circuits due to moisture or damaged power leads on electric models.
- High-pressure hydraulic fluid leaks with a risk of burns or injection into the skin.
- Prolonged exposure to noise and vibration.
Safe use
- Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before first use and for any non-routine operation.
- Wear safety glasses or a face shield, hearing protection, close-fitting gloves and safety footwear; clothing should be close-fitting with no loose-hanging items.
- Place the log splitter on firm, level, clear ground; chock wheels or supports if fitted.
- Keep the work area well lit, dry and free of obstacles; mark out a safety zone around it.
- Position the log stably and fully supported according to the equipment design; keep hands and body out of the path of the wedge and the ram.
- Do not exceed the diameter, length or weight recommended for the model.
- Operate the controls as intended (often two-handed) and do not allow another person to hold the log during the cycle.
- If a jam occurs, stop the machine, unplug it or switch off the engine and wait for a complete stop before removing materials; do not use improvised levers or your feet.
- On electric models, use outdoor-rated extension leads with an earth connection, protecting connections from moisture and avoiding puddles.
- On engine-powered models, work outdoors and away from sources of ignition; keep a fire extinguisher nearby where possible.
Storage and maintenance
- Disconnect from the mains or switch off and allow to cool before cleaning, adjusting or moving the machine.
- Remove chips and dust after each use to prevent interference with controls and ventilation.
- Regularly check fasteners, guards, power leads, controls and clamping elements; do not use if there is damage or any parts are loose.
- Inspect hydraulic hoses and fittings; if cracks, wear or leaks are found, stop using it until they are replaced.
- Keep the wedge free of nicks and handle it with gloves; sharpen or adjust only in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Handle fuels and fluids away from sparks and flames; clean up spills immediately.
- Store in a dry, ventilated place and out of the reach of children; protect from the elements and dust.
- For transport or storage, lock the wedge and the ram and secure moving components to prevent accidental movement.
- Where applicable, remove the battery or disconnect from the mains and store in the designated position to prevent leaks.
Usage restrictions
- For splitting wood only; do not use on metal, stone, plastics or other materials.
- Avoid logs with visible foreign objects (nails, screws, staples) or remove such items before splitting.
- Do not allow use by minors; keep children, pets and bystanders at a safe distance.
- Only one person should operate the machine; helpers are for loading/unloading only and must remain outside the danger zone.
- Do not use in rain, snow or on slippery or unstable surfaces.
- Do not operate under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or when fatigued.
- Do not bypass or remove guards or safety devices; do not modify the machine.
- Do not use on steep slopes nor move it with the cycle running near people.
- Take breaks to prevent overheating and operator fatigue; stop if unusual noises, vibrations or odours are detected.
