Main risks

• Cuts or snags from metal edges, mesh, wires or protruding fixings.
• Finger entrapment and pinching during assembly, tensioning mesh or filling with stones.
• Tipping or shifting due to uneven ground, strong wind or a poorly distributed load.
• Falling stones or substrate spills that may cause knocks, trips or slips.
• Manual handling injuries from heavy loads (bags of substrate, stones, filled planters).
• Damage to paving and waterproof membranes from concentrated loads or sharp edges.
• Deterioration due to corrosion, rot or loosening of joints that reduces stability over time.
• Fire risk if placed next to barbecues or other heat sources.

Safe use

• Read and follow the manufacturer’s assembly and loading instructions; retain the fixings and protective caps.
• Install on a firm, level surface; check stability before filling.
• Distribute weight evenly and do not overload. Avoid filling only one side or the top.
• For gabions, fill in layers with stones of a size that will not pass through the mesh; do not strike or force the structure.
• Wear sturdy gloves, closed footwear and, if there is dust or fragments, eye protection.
• Keep drainage holes clear and provide trays or channelling to prevent puddles and staining on terraces.
• Protect the paving with sheets or bases where there may be sharp edges or high point loads.
• On balconies and raised terraces, verify the load-bearing capacity of the structure: the weight of the substrate, water and stones can be substantial.
• If the product includes irrigation or lighting, maintain adequate separation between water and electricity and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
• For edible crops, an interior lining suitable for horticultural use may be advisable to limit direct contact of the substrate with the structure.

Storage and maintenance

• Periodically inspect mesh, joints, screws and legs or bases. Readjust or replace damaged or rusty parts.
• Remove burrs and exposed wire ends; fit caps or guards if they are missing.
• Clean away substrate residues and keep drainage clear to prevent standing water and the formation of slippery algae.
• Protect timber with the finish recommended by the manufacturer and watch for cracks, swelling or rot.
• Avoid prolonged accumulation of water inside; in cold climates, drain excess to reduce ice damage.
• Before moving or relocating, empty the planter or gabion as much as possible. Move with two people and do not drag it over delicate surfaces.
• Check for settlement of the ground or paving and re-level if the structure is no longer vertical.
• Keep corrosive products (salt, chlorine, concentrated fertilisers) away; they can degrade the materials.

Restrictions on use

• Do not use as a seat, ladder, handrail or play platform. Avoid climbing on or leaning against it.
• Do not use for high earth retention or as a structural element.
• Do not place on the edges of balconies, rooftops or stairs without a barrier; keep a safe distance from the edge.
• Do not block emergency exits or narrow passageways; avoid creating obstacles or trip hazards.
• Do not exceed the load capacity indicated by the manufacturer or use fill that is too fine and may escape through the mesh.
• Do not move the structure when it is full or hang pots or other additional loads unless the product is designed for them.
• Keep out of reach of unsupervised children and pets; risk of climbing, entrapment or falling stones.
• Avoid proximity to open flames, braziers or barbecues.
