Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Accidental lock-in or lock-out if the door closes or an automatic latch engages.
- Difficulty evacuating in an emergency if the door cannot be opened quickly from the inside.
- Minor injuries from cuts, pinches or knocks during installation or adjustment.
- Damage to door, frame or wiring due to improper drilling, fixings or alignment.
- Malfunctions due to wear, dirt, corrosion, or depleted batteries in electronic models.
- Unauthorised access due to lost keys, uncontrolled duplicates, weak codes, or misplaced cards/remotes.
- Risk to children: unintentional lock-in and choking on small parts or loose screws.
- Electrical risk with wired locks if handled without isolating the power.
Safe use
- Check the lock’s compatibility with the door (type, thickness and handing) and its intended indoor/outdoor location.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use appropriate tools; isolate the power before working on electrical components.
- Install and adjust precisely so that latch and strike plate are aligned; do not force parts or screws.
- Test opening and closing several times with the door both open and closed; ensure everyone knows how to open from the inside and keep an accessible emergency opening method.
- Manage credentials carefully: store keys securely, use strong PINs, change codes after visits, and disable lost cards/remotes.
- Do not force the key or the cylinder; if you notice stiffness or snagging, check the alignment or carry out maintenance before continuing.
- For electronic locks, monitor the battery level and have an alternative way to enter (physical key, backup code or auxiliary power where applicable).
- Outdoors, protect the lock from the elements where possible and use models suitable for outdoor use.
Storage and maintenance
- Keep spare keys in a safe place away from the door; avoid address labels.
- Clean the lock with a soft, dry cloth; avoid abrasive cleaners or excessive moisture.
- Apply the maintenance recommended by the manufacturer; avoid lubricants that attract dirt.
- Periodically check screws, plates and alignment; take up any slack and correct rubbing to prevent jamming.
- For electronic models, replace the batteries at the first warning or proactively, and check operation after replacement.
- Protect cylinders and padlocks outdoors against corrosion; dry them after rain and use covers if compatible.
- Keep cards, key fobs and electronic remotes dry and free from impacts; store recovery codes in a safe place.
Usage restrictions
- Not a toy: keep keys and small parts out of the reach of children and supervise use where there is a risk of being locked in.
- Do not block doors that must serve as escape routes; avoid configurations that prevent quick opening from the inside.
- Do not modify cylinders, latches or strike plates, nor drill additional holes beyond the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Do not use the lock to bear loads, hang objects or as an anchor point.
- Do not use locks that are not suitable for environments with high humidity, salt-laden air or extreme temperatures.
- Do not share codes or credentials over insecure channels; change them after temporary staff, building works or short guest stays.
- If the system requires wiring or machining the door and you lack experience, consider installation by qualified personnel.
- Do not leave the key inserted on the inside if the design can block entry from outside.
