Usage Warnings

Safety Showers and Eyewashes

Warnings and safety precautions

Main risks

  • Prolonged exposure to hazardous substances due to delayed activation or obstructed access.
  • Slips and falls due to water pooling on the floor during testing or use.
  • Water at an unsuitable temperature (too cold or too hot) that hinders rinsing or causes burns.
  • Incorrect pressure or flow rate: a jet that is too strong may damage the eyes, or one that is insufficient to carry away the contaminant.
  • Water contamination from stagnation, sediment or microorganisms, especially in seldom-used or self-contained units.
  • Leaks, corrosion or valve failures that prevent immediate and continuous operation.
  • Frost damage or outdoor exposure that cracks pipework and blocks flow.
  • Improper use of the equipment for general hygiene, cleaning objects or consumption, with a risk of cross-contamination.

Safe use

  • Locate and maintain the shower/eyewash clearly signposted, unobstructed and accessible at all times.
  • Before putting into service, verify that the eyewash stream is gentle and that the shower provides a broad, continuous flow.
  • In an emergency, activate immediately and remain under the water long enough to flush away the agent; carefully remove contaminated clothing while rinsing.
  • For the eyes, keep the eyelids open and direct the flow gently; avoid rubbing. Remove contact lenses as soon as possible during rinsing.
  • The water should be tepid to support effective washing; if you detect an extreme temperature, report it and rectify the installation before returning it to service.
  • Avoid kinking hoses, covering spray heads or modifying components; these could reduce the flow rate or create hazardous jets.
  • After exposure to hazardous substances, seek medical assistance as soon as possible, even if symptoms seem mild.

Storage and maintenance

  • Carry out periodic test activations to purge stagnant water and check flow rate, continuity of flow and temperature.
  • Clean nozzles and spray heads; keep the eyewash dust covers closed when not in use.
  • In self-contained units, use only potable water or solutions specified by the manufacturer and observe expiry dates and replacement intervals.
  • Protect outdoor installations against frost and extreme heat; insulate or purge when necessary.
  • Visually inspect valves, seals and connections; correct leaks or rust immediately and take defective equipment out of service until repaired.
  • Ensure good drainage in the area and non-slip surfaces; place temporary wet floor signs during testing.
  • Keep permanent signage visible and the area well lit to facilitate a rapid response.

Restrictions on use

  • Does not replace the use of safety goggles, face shields, gloves or other appropriate PPE.
  • Do not use the shower or eyewash for daily hygiene, tool cleaning or disposal of chemicals.
  • Do not drink the water or use it to prepare food.
  • Do not modify, drill or block nozzles, valves or spray heads.
  • Do not obstruct access with furniture, boxes or equipment; keep the area clear at all times.
  • Do not leave the equipment in service if the water is cloudy, has a bad odour or is at an extreme temperature.
  • Limit its use to trained personnel and, where applicable, under supervision; keep children and visitors away from the area.
