Warnings and safety precautions

Main risks

  • Burns from contact with hot surfaces, doors or glass, and from flying sparks or embers.
  • Fire caused by combustible materials placed too close (curtains, furniture, rugs) or by overloading with fuel.
  • Smoke inhalation or carbon monoxide poisoning in combustion models due to inadequate ventilation, poor draught or blockages.
  • Risk of sudden flame flare-up or deflagration when using unsuitable fuels or refuelling while the appliance is hot.
  • Electrical hazards in models with electrical components (plugs, cables, fans) if there is moisture, damage or overloading.
  • Chimney fire due to build-up of soot/creosote in poorly maintained flues.

Safe use

  • Read and keep the manufacturer’s instructions. Always maintain the safety clearances from combustible materials.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation in the room and that the flue is unobstructed on combustion models. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the area of use.
  • Use only the recommended fuel (seasoned wood, pellets, gas or bioethanol as applicable). Do not use alcohol, petrol, solvents or lighter fluids indoors.
  • Do not refuel while the fireplace is lit or hot; wait until it has completely cooled.
  • Do not leave the fireplace unattended. Use a screen or spark guard and keep children and pets away.
  • Handle logs and hot components with suitable gloves and tools. Do not cover grilles or air outlets.
  • Do not place objects on the appliance or dry clothing near the heat source.
  • If you detect a smell of gas, smoke backdraught, or unusual noises/odours, switch off or cut the supply, ventilate, and do not relight until the cause has been identified.
  • For electric models, plug into sockets in good condition, avoid overloaded extension leads and keep cables away from hot areas and moisture.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store dry wood/pellets in a ventilated place, away from the fireplace. Keep liquid fuels in their original, well-sealed containers and away from heat sources.
  • Allow ashes to cool completely and place them in a lidded metal container, outdoors and on a non-combustible surface.
  • Clean the ash pan, firebox and glass only when cold. Disconnect electric models from the mains before cleaning.
  • Carry out chimney sweeping and periodic cleaning of flues and vents at a frequency dictated by use to prevent soot build-up.
  • Check gaskets, seals, grilles and glass; replace damaged parts. Regularly check the condition and batteries of smoke and CO detectors.
  • Keep the area around the appliance clear, free of dust, papers and flammable liquids.

Restrictions of use

  • Do not use the fireplace in unventilated rooms or in bedrooms or bathrooms with combustion appliances without a dedicated flue.
  • Do not use the appliance outdoors, in caravans, tents or very small spaces unless expressly designed for that purpose.
  • Do not modify the appliance or the flue, nor block safety devices. Fixed installations and connections to flues must be carried out by qualified personnel.
  • Do not use if there are cracks, broken glass, a suspected leak, poor draught or an unstable flame; stop using it until it has been inspected.
  • Do not overload with excessive wood/pellets or force power levels beyond those specified by the manufacturer.
  • Do not use water to extinguish the fire inside the firebox or on liquid fuels; having a domestic fire extinguisher and a fire blanket is advisable.
  • Do not allow minors to light or handle the fireplace; constant supervision is required when children or pets are nearby.
