Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Cuts and lacerations when handling knives, scissors or other blades during sharpening.
- Slippage of the blade or the sharpener, which can cause injuries or damage to surfaces.
- Projection of small metal particles or abrasive dust into the eyes.
- Abrasions or pinching of the fingers when holding guides, supports or bases.
- Instability of the table or the sharpener, with a risk of the utensil or blade falling.
- Edge deterioration due to incorrect angles or pressure, with possible chipping of the edge in subsequent use.
- Skin irritation from prolonged contact with sharpening slurry or oils.
- Food contamination if the blade is not thoroughly cleaned after sharpening.
Safe use
- Check the condition of the sharpener and the blade before starting; do not use the product if you observe cracks, looseness or loose parts.
- Work on a stable, dry, non-slip surface; secure the sharpener or the workpiece if the design allows.
- Keep fingers always away from the edge and the blade's path; maintain a firm grip and a comfortable posture.
- A cut-resistant glove is recommended on the hand holding the blade, and safety glasses when chips or dust are generated.
- Make controlled passes, without rushing, using moderate pressure and predictable movements.
- Use water or oil only if the product indicates it, and remove any excess to prevent slipping.
- Do not force blades that are heavily nicked, bent or have loose handles; repair or replace them before sharpening.
- Stop if you feel fatigue or become distracted; loss of attention increases the risk of cuts.
- When finished, remove burrs and clean the blade thoroughly to remove filings before using it with food; avoid checking the edge by running your finger along it.
Storage and maintenance
- Clean the sharpener after each use to remove filings and slurry; dry it completely.
- Keep abrasive surfaces free of grease and dirt; use a soft brush to avoid damaging them.
- Check for uneven wear, chips or cracks; replace abrasive inserts or the sharpener if they are damaged.
- Keep non-slip bases, guides and screws in good condition; adjust or replace if necessary.
- Store the sharpener in its case or box, protected from impacts, out of the reach of children.
- Store in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from moisture and extreme temperatures.
- Avoid harsh solvents that could damage the sharpener's material.
- For stones that require water or oil, follow the product's specific recommendations on soaking and drying.
Usage restrictions
- Not a toy; keep out of the reach of children. Children only under direct adult supervision.
- Do not use if you are tired, under the influence of alcohol, or taking medication that reduces alertness.
- Do not sharpen blade types or materials for which the sharpener is not intended (e.g., serrated blades, ceramic, or special coatings unless specified).
- Do not work on unstable, wet or elevated surfaces; do not sharpen while walking or carrying the tool.
- Do not apply excessive force or attempt to straighten or remove dents in blades with the sharpener.
- Do not use the sharpener as a file, wedge or prying tool.
- In the kitchen, clean the sharpener and the work area between uses to prevent cross-contamination.
- Keep bystanders and pets outside the working area to prevent accidental contact with the cutting edge.
