Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Ejection of particles, polish residue and disc fragments at high speed, posing a risk to eyes and skin.
- Entanglement with rotating parts of the tool or the disc (loose clothing, hair, cords or unsuitable gloves).
- Overheating of the disc or the surface being worked, potentially causing burns and finish damage.
- Inhalation of dust and mists from polishing compounds; eye and skin irritation from prolonged contact.
- Vibration and noise during prolonged use, which can cause fatigue and discomfort in hands and ears.
- Disc breakage or detachment of Velcro/foam due to wear or incorrect assembly.
- Loss of control of the tool and damage to edges, trim or other adjacent areas.
- Fire risk when working near flammable vapours or materials that can ignite easily from heat/friction.
Safe use
- Check compatibility of diameter, fixing system and maximum disc speed with the tool; do not exceed the rated speed.
- Inspect the disc before each use: cracks, cuts, foam or fabric coming away, and worn Velcro; if you observe damage, discard it.
- Fit and centre the disc onto the recommended backing pad; tighten without over-tightening and perform a brief low-speed test to check for vibration.
- Wear eye protection and, where necessary, a mask for dust/vapours and hearing protection. Use close-fitting gloves for handling compounds and cleaning; avoid loose gloves during polishing.
- Keep clothing close-fitting and hair tied back; remove dangling jewellery and work in a clear, well-lit area.
- Start at low speed with light pressure; keep the disc moving and work with the face of the disc, avoiding the edge unless the design permits.
- Monitor the temperature of the disc and the surface; if you notice excessive heat or a burning smell, reduce pressure/speed and allow to cool.
- Disconnect the tool from the mains or remove the battery before fitting, adjusting or changing the disc.
- Avoid wet use unless both disc and tool are suitable; protect the tool from splashes when working with liquid compounds.
- Hold the tool firmly and, where appropriate, secure the workpiece; stop if abnormal vibration or noise appears and check the assembly.
Storage and maintenance
- Store discs in a dry, ventilated place, flat, away from direct heat, frost and sunlight to prevent warping.
- Keep the discs clean of dust and residues; avoid aggressive solvents that may damage foam, wool, microfibre or Velcro.
- Where applicable, wash gently and allow to dry completely at room temperature before reusing; do not accelerate drying with intense heat.
- Separate discs by material and by the type of compound used to avoid cross-contamination that could scratch surfaces.
- Periodically check the condition of the Velcro and the backing pad; if they lose grip, replace the disc or the backing pad.
- Discard discs that are heavily worn, hardened, frayed, warped, or with detached adhesives/fibres.
- Keep polishing compounds tightly closed and away from sources of heat and sparks.
Restrictions on use
- Do not use discs that are damaged, deformed or with Velcro/foam detached.
- Do not exceed the disc’s maximum rated speed or use improvised adaptors or incompatible pads.
- Do not use the disc on materials or finishes for which it is not intended; if in doubt, perform a test in a discreet area.
- Do not work near open flames, flammable vapours or combustible dust.
- Do not apply excessive pressure or use the edge of the disc continuously.
- Do not operate the tool without the appropriate guards where applicable.
- Do not use wet discs on power tools that are not designed for wet operation.
- Do not allow use by minors and provide supervision and basic training to inexperienced users.
- Do not polish moving parts or vehicles in motion; ensure the workpiece is stable before starting.
