Safety warnings and precautions

Key risks

  • Trips and falls from hoses laid out across walkways.
  • Pinching or trapping of fingers in guides, rollers and mechanisms during rewinding.
  • Impact from sudden kickback on auto-retracting models if the hose is let go.
  • Leaks or splashes that can create slippery surfaces.
  • Hose or connection failure due to pressure spikes or twisting.
  • Reel detachment if the wall fixing is inadequate or loose.
  • Degradation from strong sunlight or frost that may cause cracks and leaks.
  • Muscle strain when pulling long or heavy hoses.

Safe use

  • Turn off the tap and release pressure by opening the nozzle before starting to rewind.
  • Keep hands, clothing and hair away from the guide and rollers; use the lock or brake if your model has one.
  • Guide the hose by hand as you walk towards the reel, avoiding tugs and cross-overs.
  • Unwind only what you need, keeping the hose free of kinks and twists to avoid straining the mechanism.
  • Check connections and seals before turning on the water; hand-tighten without overtightening to avoid damaging threads.
  • Secure the base or wall anchor and check the bracket is stable before pulling firmly.
  • Keep the work area clear to prevent trips and snags.
  • If using watering products (fertilisers, cleaners), check compatibility and rinse the hose through after use.

Storage and maintenance

  • Drain the hose before storage, especially in winter, to prevent frost damage.
  • Store the reel in a dry, shaded place; minimise prolonged exposure to sunlight and heat sources.
  • If portable, keep it under cover in cold seasons; if wall-mounted, shut off the supply and cover the unit.
  • Remove sand and dirt from the guide/rollers to ensure smooth winding.
  • Periodically inspect the hose, seals, fittings and fixings; replace worn or cracked parts.
  • Lubricate moving parts only if specified by the manufacturer.
  • If the mechanism jams, stop rewinding and untangle it manually without forcing it.

Restrictions on use

  • Do not use with hot water, steam or pressure washers unless expressly specified for the product.
  • Do not use with solvents, fuels or other aggressive chemicals that may damage the hose or seals.
  • Do not use for drinking water unless the product clearly states it is suitable.
  • Do not hang from, stand on or use the reel or hose to drag, lift or secure loads.
  • Do not pull the reel by the hose to move it; use the handle or wheels if fitted.
  • Do not allow children to operate the auto-retract; supervise around children and pets.
  • Do not use if there are leaks, cracks, bulges or loose fixings; repair or replace before operating.
  • Do not install or use on unstable surfaces or at heights that could compromise the safety of people and property.
