Safety warnings and precautions
Key risks
- Cuts and punctures from the exposed blade edge.
- Slips and loss of control, especially with dull edges or slippery surfaces.
- Flying splinters or fragments from the material or from a damaged edge, posing an eye hazard.
- Impacts and rebound when using an unsuitable mallet or hammer, or striking outside the intended area.
- Breakage or detachment of the handle or blade due to wear, cracks or misuse.
- Damage when encountering nails, staples or other foreign objects hidden in the workpiece.
- Injuries caused by dropping the tool or by carrying it without a protective sheath.
Safe use
- Inspect before use: secure handle, tight ferrules, blade free of cracks or deformation, and an intact cutting edge.
- Secure the workpiece with clamps or stops and work on a stable, clear and well-lit surface.
- Keep hands and body out of the cutting line; make short, controlled strokes, always cutting away from yourself.
- Keep the edge sharp; a dull edge requires more force and increases the risk of slipping.
- Use only the type of mallet or hammer recommended for the model, and strike only on the designated area.
- Before chiselling, locate and remove nails, staples or other metal elements in the work area.
- Wear eye protection; consider cut-resistant gloves for handling and transport, avoiding bulky gloves during cutting if they reduce feel and control.
- Carry the chisel with a sheath and the blade pointing downwards; do not carry it in pockets.
- Stop work if you notice play, unusual vibrations or loss of control.
Storage and maintenance
- Clean and dry the tool after use to prevent corrosion; apply a light protective film to the edge if appropriate.
- Store cutting edges with sheaths or guards and separate from other tools to prevent nicks and accidental cuts.
- Store in a dry, ventilated place, away from moisture and heat sources.
- Sharpen periodically using methods appropriate to the tool type; carefully remove burrs and nicks.
- Replace cracked or loose handles and discard blades with cracks or deformations that cannot be safely repaired.
- Check that the striking end (if fitted) is not cracked or deformed; discontinue use if damaged.
- Keep workbench clamping systems in good condition for safer control.
Restrictions of use
- Do not use the chisel as a lever, punch, screwdriver or for tasks it is not designed for.
- Do not work on materials incompatible with the tool, nor strike it with non-recommended tools.
- Do not use the tool if it shows play, advanced corrosion, a heavily nicked edge, or absence of a sheath during transport.
- Do not modify the tool (heating, filing or shortening it excessively) if this could compromise its strength or control.
- Do not work near exposed live conductors or on unstable surfaces, or on ladders without the workpiece being firmly secured.
- Keep out of reach of children; minors only under competent adult supervision.
