Usage Warnings
Extension Leads and Cable Reels
Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Electric shock from contact with plugs or cables that are damaged, wet or improperly connected.
- Overheating and fire due to overload or using the cable reel without unwinding enough cable.
- Trips and falls caused by cables running across walkways.
- Crushing, cuts or pinching of the cable when routed through doors, under wheels or along sharp edges.
- Damage from moisture, splashes or outdoor use with equipment not rated for it.
- Finger pinching when winding or unwinding the drum.
Safe use
- Check the maximum power/current stated on the product and the total of the connected equipment; do not exceed it.
- Fully unwind the cable from the reel for continuous work or medium/high loads, and avoid covering the drum during use.
- Do not daisy-chain multiple extension leads or connect power strips in series.
- Keep connections dry and off the floor; do not use the equipment with wet hands.
- Route the cable around perimeters and secure it where it crosses walkways to prevent trips; do not run it under rugs, doors or wheels.
- Insert and remove the plug by holding the plug body; never pull on the cable.
- Use earthed sockets when required by the equipment and ensure plugs fit securely.
- Do not force the drum mechanism; wind and unwind evenly, without knots or twists.
Storage and maintenance
- Disconnect from the mains before winding, unwinding or cleaning.
- Regularly check the condition of the cable, plugs and sockets: look for cuts, cracks, crushing, discolouration or loose connections. If you find any damage, stop using it.
- Clean dry; avoid using liquids or sprays on electrical parts.
- Wind without sharp bends and without excessive tension; do not leave the cable taut.
- Store in a dry, ventilated place, protected from direct sunlight, dust and heat sources.
- Avoid placing weight on the drum or the cable; hang it or place it on a shelf to prevent deformation.
- If it has become wet, allow it to dry completely before using again.
- Protect sockets and plugs when not in use.
Usage restrictions
- Do not use extension leads or cable reels as a fixed installation or a permanent solution.
- Do not use them outdoors or in damp areas unless the product clearly indicates it is suitable for this.
- Do not connect equipment with a high continuous demand (for example, heaters, compressors or welders) if the extension lead or cable reel is not designed for such loads.
- Do not modify the cable or make DIY splices; do not replace plugs or sockets yourself.
- Do not use the equipment if it shows visible damage, a burning smell or unusual heating.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets; do not allow them to play with the cable or the drum.
- Do not hang objects from the cable or drag the drum by pulling it.
- Do not use the cable reel in enclosed, unventilated spaces, nor cover it during operation.
