- Blisters, chafing and fatigue from prolonged grip or improper technique.

- Foot injuries from the tool being dropped or inadvertent contact with the edge.

Safe use
- Check before use: blade secure with no play, handle free of cracks or splinters, and fixings tightened.
- Wear work gloves, closed, non-slip footwear and eye protection when there is a risk of flying debris.
- Keep the area clear and maintain a safe distance from other people and pets.
- Work with your feet well planted, back straight and knees bent; make controlled strikes, avoiding movements above shoulder height.
- Always direct the blade away from your body and feet; if it gets stuck, free it without excessive levering.
- Check the ground and the possible presence of stones, roots or pipes or cables before digging.
- Take regular breaks and alternate hands or tasks to reduce fatigue and the risk of repetitive strain injuries.
- Carry the tool with the blade facing downwards and, if possible, with a guard; do not run or carry it with the edge exposed towards other people.
- When placing it on the ground, orient the edge downwards and away from walkways; never leave it with the blade facing upwards.
Storage and maintenance
- Remove soil and sap after use and dry thoroughly to prevent corrosion.
- Apply a light coat of oil to the metal parts and protect the edge with a sheath or guard.
- Store hanging or on a stable rack, in a dry, ventilated place, out of the reach of children and pets.
- Sharpen when necessary using appropriate methods and wearing gloves; remove burrs.
- Inspect periodically and retighten fixings; replace cracked handles or heads that are deformed/excessively corroded.
- For wooden handles, sand off splinters and treat the surface if appropriate to prevent cracking.
- Do not store with weight on top or in unstable positions that could cause it to fall.
