Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Cuts and lacerations from contact with sharp blades.
- Entrapment and pinching at the pivot, spring or between the handles.
- Flying splinters, thorns or branch fragments towards the eyes and face.
- Falling branches and loss of balance when applying force or working at height.
- Slipping due to wet handles or hands, resulting in loss of control of the tool.
- Blade breakage or deformation when attempting over-sized cuts, with possible sudden release.
- Skin irritation from sap, resins or maintenance lubricants.
- Electrical hazard if a cable is accidentally contacted or when pruning near power lines.
- Fatigue and overexertion in hands, wrists and shoulders from prolonged use.
Safe use
- Before starting, check that the blades are clean and free of nicks, screws are tight and the safety catch is operational; do not use the tool if it is damaged.
- Wear cut-resistant gloves, safety glasses and closed footwear with a non-slip sole.
- Maintain a stable posture; hold the branch so your fingers always remain outside the cutting path.
- Make cuts away from your body and other people; keep bystanders and pets at a safe distance.
- Do not exceed the tool's recommended cutting diameter; for thicker branches use a more suitable implement.
- Be aware of branch tension: cut in sections to reduce kickback or blade pinching.
- Keep handles and hands dry and clean; with two-handed loppers, use both hands for better control.
- Carry the tool with the blades closed and the safety catch engaged, preferably in a sheath.
- Avoid working in the rain or near power lines; if using a ladder, ensure it is stable and do not overreach.
Storage and maintenance
- Clean after each use, removing sap and dirt; dry thoroughly to prevent corrosion.
- Apply a light coat of oil to the blades and pivot; store the tool closed with the safety catch engaged, ideally in a sheath.
- Store in a dry, ventilated place, out of reach of children and pets.
- Sharpen periodically with suitable tools; do not use the tool if the blades are dull, bent or cracked.
- Check and tighten screws and nuts when necessary; replace worn parts such as springs, stops or handles with compatible spares.
- Avoid solvents or harsh cleaners that may damage the handles or coatings.
- Remove and safely dispose of sharp offcuts; recycle the tool when beyond repair at local collection points.
Restrictions of use
- Not suitable for cutting metal, wire, stone, cable or other materials than branches, stems and the like.
- Do not use as a lever, hammer or screwdriver; do not modify the tool or remove stops or safety catches.
- Do not use if you are tired, drowsy or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medicines that reduce attention.
- Do not allow use by minors; teenagers only under the direct supervision of a competent adult.
- Do not work with poor visibility or in weather conditions that reduce grip or control.
- Do not reach for branches outside your control zone or cut above shoulder height without equipment specifically for work at height.
- Do not pass the tool to another person with the blades open; always hand it over closed with the safety catch engaged.
