Hose Clips and Split Pins
Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Cuts and scratches from sharp edges or ends of clamps and pins.
- Pinching and entrapment when tensioning, closing or releasing components.
- Sudden ejection of components if they are released under tension or due to vibration.
- Damage to hoses, pipes or cables due to over-tightening; leaks or detachment due to under-tightening or an unsuitable size.
- Interference with moving or rotating parts that may cause snagging or breakage.
- Corrosion, fatigue or deformation that can lead to sudden failure.
- Eye injuries from swarf when cutting excess ends or removing pins.
- Additional risk when working on systems under pressure, at elevated temperature, or with aggressive fluids.
Safe use
- Select the correct size and type for the diameter and material of the part to be secured; avoid makeshift fixes.
- Before installing or removing, depressurise, allow to cool, and relieve mechanical stresses in the system.
- Use appropriate tools in good condition; tighten gradually and in a controlled manner, without forcing.
- Keep fingers away from closing areas; wear work gloves and safety goggles.
- For pins, align the holes correctly; do not enlarge them by hammering or force the fit.
- Secure the closure: open and splay the legs of split pins, and check that the clamp is properly seated with no exposed sharp edges.
- Trim or cover protruding ends to prevent snagging on clothing, cables or other components.
- After installation, check the fastening and inspect again after a short period of use, especially in environments with vibration.
Storage and maintenance
- Store in a dry, clean and well-ventilated place, away from moisture and corrosive agents.
- Sort by size and type to avoid mix-ups; protect threads and edges from impacts or deformation.
- Clean off dirt, grease or chemicals after use to extend service life.
- Inspect periodically: look for rust, cracks, deformation, worn threads or loss of elasticity.
- Lightly lubricate screws or mechanisms where appropriate; avoid products that could damage nearby rubber or plastics.
- Discard parts that are bent, cracked, severely corroded or damaged; do not attempt to straighten them for reuse.
- Avoid storing them outdoors or under load if they are not designed for it.
Restrictions of use
- Do not use for lifting, suspending, hoisting, or as an anchorage point or safety device.
- Do not use in contact with live electrical conductors or near flames or intense heat unless the product is specifically designed for it.
- Do not replace structural elements with generic clamps or pins.
- Do not combine incompatible sizes or mix materials that may favour accelerated corrosion or failures.
- Do not reuse single-use pins or those that have lost fit or tension.
- Keep out of the reach of children; handling only by persons familiar with hand tools.
