Warnings and safety precautions

Main risks

  • Electric shock, sparks and arcing when connecting or disconnecting.
  • Battery explosion due to accumulation of flammable gases if a spark is generated or there is poor ventilation.
  • Chemical burns from contact with electrolyte in lead–acid batteries.
  • Damage to vehicle electronics due to reverse polarity, voltage spikes or incorrect connections.
  • Overheating of cables or clamps due to poor contact or prolonged use, with risk of burns or fire.
  • Pinching or cuts when handling clamps; injuries from moving engine parts during starting.
  • Inhalation of vapours or smoke in the event of overcharging or a damaged battery.
  • Damage to lithium batteries if incompatible equipment is used.

Safe use

  • Check voltage compatibility (e.g., 12/24 V) and the battery type before connecting.
  • Inspect the condition of the equipment: insulation intact, clamps firm and clean, free of corrosion or cracks.
  • Wear eye protection and gloves; remove metal jewellery and avoid loose clothing.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources; do not smoke.
  • Park with the handbrake applied and engine off; switch off electrical loads before connecting.
  • Typical jump-start connection: red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of each battery; black clamp to an earth point on the chassis of the discharged vehicle, away from the battery. Disconnect in the reverse order.
  • For chargers: connect the clamps to the battery before plugging into the mains; disconnect from the mains before removing the clamps. Place the charger on a stable, clear surface.
  • Prevent the clamps from touching each other; keep the cables away from fans, belts and hot surfaces.
  • Monitor for abnormal temperature, noises or odours; stop use if they appear.
  • Observe recommended cranking times and allow the equipment to rest between attempts.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store the equipment clean and dry, away from moisture, dust, oils and direct sunlight.
  • Coil the cables without knots or twists; do not place weight on them or run them over sharp edges.
  • Protect the clamp jaws to prevent dirt and accidental contacts.
  • Clean clamps and insulation with a dry cloth; ensure everything is completely dry before the next use.
  • Periodically check springs, screws and insulation; replace the equipment if there are cuts, exposed wires, loose parts or a burning smell.
  • Keep the charger's ventilation grilles clear and leave space around it during use and until it cools.
  • Unplug the charger when not in use.

Restrictions on use

  • Do not use with batteries that are swollen, cracked, frozen or leaking, or that emit smoke or a strong odour.
  • Do not use in the rain, on wet surfaces or in unventilated spaces, or where flammable vapours are present.
  • Do not reverse polarity or allow the clamps to touch; do not force loose or corroded connections.
  • Do not exceed the current or charging mode for which the equipment is designed, nor cover the charger when in operation.
  • Do not place the charger on the battery or inside the engine bay while it is operating.
  • Do not use on the high-voltage system of hybrid or electric vehicles; if applicable, connect only to the 12 V points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
  • Do not modify the equipment or carry out makeshift repairs.
  • Keep out of reach of children and do not allow use without appropriate supervision and understanding.
