Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Falls and injuries during work at height on roofs or elevated structures.
  • Impacts or entrapment when handling heavy panels, rails and anchors.
  • Cuts from metal edges, swarf or tools.
  • Electrical hazard due to proximity to energised modules and DC connections.
  • Fire or overheating due to pinched cables, abrasion or loose connections.
  • Water ingress due to poorly sealed roof penetrations.
  • Detachment or instability due to insufficient anchoring under wind or snow loads.
  • Corrosion and material degradation due to dissimilar metals, saline or chemical environments.
  • Damage to the building structure when drilling in unsuitable areas or into concealed services.
  • Additional risks from adverse weather (high winds, rain, ice or thunderstorms).

Safe use

  • Verify that the structure and accessories are compatible with the roof/ground type and the intended loads.
  • Plan anchorage points and weight distribution before starting; keep the work area tidy and free of obstructions.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE): helmet, cut-resistant gloves, safety glasses, non-slip footwear and a fall-arrest system when working at height.
  • Work with the photovoltaic (PV) generator de-energised whenever possible: cover modules, lock off isolators, and do not connect or disconnect under load.
  • Follow the assembly sequence specified by the manufacturer; use appropriate tools and tighten fasteners without exceeding the recommended torque.
  • Use compatible fixings and accessories; avoid mixing dissimilar metals that may cause galvanic corrosion, and use insulating washers or isolators where appropriate.
  • Before drilling, check for hidden cables, pipes or other services; seal penetrations to maintain weathertightness.
  • Manage cabling with UV-resistant ties and clips; protect sharp edges, observe bend radii, and avoid moving or hot areas.
  • Maintain ventilation clearances beneath the modules and do not step on the panels; use walkways or suitable supports.
  • Suspend installation in high winds, rain, ice or thunderstorms.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store rails, anchors and accessories in a dry, ventilated place protected from the weather; avoid direct contact with damp floors.
  • Avoid stacking that could deform profiles or frames; use stable supports and impact protection.
  • Separate dissimilar metals during storage to reduce corrosion; keep connectors and terminals capped with dust plugs.
  • Protect plastics and rubbers from solar radiation until installation; keep sealants and adhesives in their original packaging and within their shelf life.
  • Periodically check (especially after storms) bolt tightness and the condition of anchors, seals and profiles; replace damaged or corroded parts.
  • Inspect the cabling: ties, chafe points and insulation; re-route or protect where necessary.
  • Clean without abrasive products or pressure jets on seals; remove leaves and debris that obstruct drainage or ventilation.

Restrictions on use

  • Do not use the structure as scaffolding, a walkway or a safety anchor point.
  • Do not modify, drill or cut components contrary to the manufacturer's instructions; do not reuse deformed or damaged fixings.
  • Do not mix connectors or accessories from incompatible makes/models.
  • Do not install on deteriorated roofs or structures, those with damp issues, or without sufficient load-bearing capacity.
  • Do not exceed the specified loads for wind, snow or impact; observe minimum distances to edges and obstacles where specified.
  • Do not carry out electrical connections or live work without the proper qualifications and tools.
  • Do not work at height alone, and keep children and pets away from the installation and maintenance area.
  • Do not assemble or handle components during adverse weather conditions.
