Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Exposure to biological fluids and splashes that may cause cross-contamination.
- Contact with cleaning or disinfectant products that may irritate the skin, eyes or respiratory tract.
- Slip hazard due to water or spills around the equipment.
- Possible burns from very hot water or steam during rinsing.
- Minor pinching or entrapment from lids, levers or flush mechanisms, where present.
- Blockages and bad odours caused by pouring inappropriate waste or insufficient cleaning.
- Cuts or punctures from sharp objects disposed of incorrectly.
Safe use
- Use disposable gloves and, if there is a risk of splashes, eye protection and a face mask.
- Check the water temperature before rinsing to prevent burns.
- Empty and rinse slowly, keeping the bedpan low and stable to minimise splashing; lower the lid before operating the flush if the model has one.
- Clean and disinfect the contact surface after each use, following the cleaning product instructions.
- Do not mix cleaners that may react with each other (for example, bleach with ammonia or acids).
- Remove and manage any solid or sharp waste separately in appropriate containers.
- Wipe up water on the floor immediately and, if necessary, display wet floor signage to prevent slips.
- Wash your hands properly when finished and remove gloves without touching their outer surface.
Storage and maintenance
- Keep the area ventilated, uncluttered and well lit to detect spills or dirt.
- Store cleaning products in their original containers, tightly closed and out of public reach.
- Physically separate clean from dirty items; store clean bedpans on dry, raised shelving.
- Regularly inspect the condition of the sluice sink (cracks, fixings, taps, flush and trap). In the event of leaks or damage, take it temporarily out of service and display warning signage.
- Regularly disinfect exterior surfaces, controls and high-touch areas.
- Prevent build-up of waste in drains; do not use sharp objects that could damage the equipment to clear blockages.
- Replace brushes, cloths and other tools assigned to this area frequently, and keep them labelled for exclusive use.
Restrictions on use
- Intended for the handling and rinsing of bedpans, urinals and sanitary utensils; do not use it for handwashing or for cleaning kitchen utensils, food, clothing or other items.
- Do not allow use by children or the general public; restrict use to authorised personnel.
- Do not sit, stand or place heavy loads on the sluice sink.
- Do not pour oils, paints, cements, wipes, sanitary pads or other waste that may cause blockages.
- Do not use the equipment if it is loose, cracked, has persistent odours, or if the flush does not function correctly.
- Do not tamper with associated plumbing or electrical installations; installation and repair must be carried out by qualified personnel.
- Do not operate without appropriate personal protection when there is a risk of contact with fluids or splashes.
