Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Skin and eye irritation from contact with sap, stinging hairs or pollen; possible allergic reactions.
  • Accidental ingestion of potentially toxic leaves, flowers, berries or seeds, especially dangerous for children and pets.
  • Cuts and punctures caused by spines, barbs or sharp leaf edges.
  • Tipping of heavy pots and planters or falling branches, with a risk of impact injuries and trapped fingers when moving them.
  • Slips due to irrigation water, mud or spilled compost on floors and patios.
  • Compost dust and moulds that may cause respiratory irritation when repotting.
  • Attraction of insects by flowers or sap, with possible stings or bites.
  • Risk of ignition if dry plant material accumulates near flames or sparks.

Safe use

  • Identify the plant and its needs (indoor/outdoor, light, watering) before placing it.
  • Keep plants out of reach of children and pets if they may be toxic or have spines.
  • Wear gloves and, where appropriate, long sleeves and eye protection when pruning or repotting; wash your hands after handling.
  • Avoid touching your eyes and mouth while working with plants or compost; cover cuts or wounds before handling.
  • Repot in well-ventilated areas and lightly moisten the compost to reduce dust.
  • Place pots on stable, level surfaces; secure or ballast planters exposed to wind.
  • Do not obstruct pathways, doors or stairs with branches or containers; mark stakes or wires so they are visible.
  • Water without waterlogging and remove excess water from saucers to prevent puddles and mosquitoes.
  • Do not consume any part of the plant unless it is clearly identified as edible and suitable for that use.

Storage and maintenance

  • Until planting, keep plants upright, with the root ball moist but not waterlogged, and protected from extreme temperatures.
  • Avoid prolonged direct sun on the nursery pot to prevent overheating the roots.
  • Check stakes, clips and ties regularly; loosen if they mark the stem or trunk.
  • Remove dead leaves and flowers to reduce mould and pests; dispose of the waste in the organic bin, never down drains.
  • Clean pot saucers and trays to prevent standing water; sanitise reused pots before planting.
  • Replace compost with a bad odour or visible mould and ventilate the work area.
  • Inspect for signs of pests; if you apply treatments, use only products suitable for plants and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • After winds or storms, check the stability of young trees and carefully remove damaged material that could fall.

Usage restrictions

  • Do not place plants or dry debris near flames, stoves, barbecues or other heat sources.
  • Do not place pots on edges, ledges or railings without reliable fixing; avoid hanging them from supports not designed for their weight.
  • Do not climb, sit on or hang objects from branches that are not designed to bear a load.
  • Do not carry out pruning at height or tasks with a risk of falling without training and appropriate equipment; assign them to qualified personnel.
  • Do not allow young children to play with seeds, ornamental fruits or soil without supervision.
  • Do not place heavy-pollen plants in bedrooms or enclosed spaces if there are people with allergies or asthma.
  • Do not transport trees or large pots without assistance or appropriate means (trolley, handles), to avoid injury.
  • Do not spray treatments indoors without adequate ventilation or appropriate personal protection.
