Thermostats and Temperature Controllers

Safety warnings and precautions

Key risks

  • Electric shock or short circuits when handling wiring or connection terminals.
  • Overheating or equipment damage due to incorrect connections or exceeding the thermostat’s rated load.
  • Incorrect readings if the sensor is exposed to direct sunlight, draughts, heat sources, or is covered, leading to excessive cooling or heating.
  • Risk of scalding with hot water if excessively high temperatures are set on systems controlling domestic hot water (DHW).
  • Risk of frost damage to the property or pipework if temperatures are set too low in winter or communication with the controlled equipment is lost.
  • System damage due to incompatibility with the type of boiler, heat pump, underfloor heating or other equipment if the compatibility specified by the manufacturer is not verified.
  • Battery-related incidents: leakage, overheating due to incorrect polarity, or accidental ingestion (take special care with button cell batteries).
  • Unauthorised access on connected models that could improperly turn heating or cooling on or off.

Safe use

  • Before installing or handling wiring, switch off the power supply to the relevant circuit. If you lack experience, have the installation carried out by a qualified professional.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s diagram and verify compatibility of voltages, load type and communications of the equipment to be controlled.
  • Position the thermostat at a typical mounting height, away from radiators, ovens, sunny windows, draughts, areas hidden behind curtains or furniture, and sources of moisture.
  • Do not install in bathrooms or splash-prone areas unless the product clearly states that it is suitable for such environments.
  • Do not cover the thermostat or its sensor; ensure air can circulate freely around it.
  • After installation, perform a test: verify that it turns the system on and off according to the selected temperature, and monitor its behaviour for the first few hours or days.
  • Set reasonable maximum and minimum temperature limits for heating, cooling and, where applicable, hot water.
  • Connected models: use strong passwords, enable two-step verification if available, and update the app/firmware when recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Handle the screen and controls with clean, dry hands; do not use sharp objects.
  • Use only the specified battery type, observe the correct polarity, and do not mix new and used batteries.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store the product in a dry, clean and ventilated place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture and extreme temperatures.
  • If you will not use it for an extended period, remove the batteries and store them separately out of the reach of children.
  • Clean the casing and sensor area with a soft, dry cloth; do not use sprays, solvents or apply water directly.
  • Periodically check correct operation: that readings are consistent and that the system responds to setpoint changes. After power cuts, verify the date, time and programmes.
  • For wireless models, check signal strength and replace batteries when a low battery is indicated.
  • Carry out visual inspections to detect pinched cables, loose terminals or damaged casing; if you observe any damage, stop using it until rectified.
  • If the equipment uses external probes (e.g., floor sensors), avoid drilling into, cutting or pinching the cables during building work or drilling.

Restrictions on use

  • Keep the device and batteries out of reach of children and pets; use the child lock if the model offers it.
  • Do not use the thermostat to control equipment that requires redundant safety systems or for safety-critical applications.
  • Do not connect loads that exceed the maximum current or power ratings specified by the thermostat manufacturer.
  • Do not modify the product or use accessories not specified for that model.
  • Do not install in explosive atmospheres, areas with high levels of condensation, or areas with conductive dust, unless the product is specifically designed for it.
  • Do not locate the thermostat inside sealed enclosures or recessed spaces without ventilation unless permitted by the manufacturer.
  • Do not use the product if it shows cracks, deformation, a burning smell, abnormal heat, or signs of liquid on the casing.
  • Avoid placing the control where third parties can change the temperature unsupervised in homes with people vulnerable to temperature changes.
