Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Serious eye injury from looking at the sun, eclipses, or very intense light sources through the lenses.
  • Falls and impacts from loss of balance when walking, climbing, or approaching edges while looking through the viewfinder.
  • Burns or fire starting if the objective lenses concentrate sunlight onto flammable materials.
  • Eye strain, dizziness, or neck pain from prolonged use or improper adjustments.
  • Pinched fingers in hinges or the focus wheel, and bumps with the device or tripod (if used).
  • Damage from sand, salt, and moisture that can scratch lenses, cause fogging, or lead to mould if stored while damp.
  • Lens breakage with risk of cuts from impacts or drops.
  • Risk of snagging or strangulation with the strap, especially for children or in dense vegetation.
  • If the model uses batteries or electronics (e.g., lighting), risk of overheating or leakage when using unsuitable or incorrectly installed batteries.

Safe use

  • Never look at the sun, eclipses, or intense sources such as welding arcs, lasers, or spotlights.
  • Stop before raising the device to your eyes; do not walk, drive, or climb while observing.
  • Calmly adjust the interpupillary distance, focus, and dioptres; take breaks to avoid eye strain.
  • Keep the strap adjusted and not looped around your neck; use a quick-release if available.
  • Hold the device with both hands; for prolonged observations consider a compatible harness or support to distribute the weight.
  • Avoid touching the lenses; fit the caps when not observing. Remove sand or dust by gently blowing before cleaning with a microfibre cloth.
  • At the beach, in fog, or in rain, use a protective cover and dry the device as soon as possible.
  • Keep a safe distance from animals and avoid approaching edges, cliffs, or banks to 'get a better view'.
  • If you wear glasses, retract the eyecups to avoid scratches and improve the field of view.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store in a padded case, with caps fitted, in a dry, ventilated place. Avoid leaving it pointed towards the sun.
  • Do not expose the device to high temperatures (e.g., inside a car in the sun) or to sudden changes that encourage condensation.
  • After exposure to moisture, salt spray, or dust, allow to air-dry in an upright position and clean the exterior with a soft cloth. Do not use alcohol or solvents on the lenses.
  • Remove sand before any cleaning to avoid scratching coatings.
  • Periodically check screws, hinges, and strap mounts; replace damaged straps or parts.
  • Store with desiccant sachets if necessary and replace them when saturated.
  • If the model uses batteries, remove them if it will not be used for an extended period and use only the type specified by the manufacturer.
  • Do not force or open the device body; if you detect play, cracks, or persistent internal fogging, stop using it.

Usage restrictions

  • Not a toy. Keep out of reach of small children; use by minors only under adult supervision.
  • Do not look at the sun or any intense light source. Do not use as a magnifying glass to concentrate light.
  • Do not use while driving, cycling, climbing, crossing a river, or near edges and areas with traffic.
  • Do not use the device if it has cracked lenses, loose parts, or a damaged strap.
  • Do not modify, drill, paint lenses, or apply adhesives to focus mechanisms or hinges.
  • Avoid resting the device where it may fall or be struck (table edges, dashboards, unprotected backpacks).
  • If the product includes electronics, lighting, or a rangefinder, follow the manufacturer's specific warnings and use only recommended batteries.
