Shelving Units and Bookshelves

Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Tipping of tall or narrow shelving units if not properly anchored.
  • Falling objects or shelves due to overloading or uneven weight distribution.
  • Detachment of wall-mounted shelves due to using fixings unsuitable for the wall type.
  • Knocks in walkways or at low height, especially at corners and edges.
  • Finger trapping during assembly or when adjusting shelves.
  • Material degradation from moisture, condensation or direct heat, reducing strength.
  • Breakage of fragile shelves (e.g., glass) due to impacts or stresses.

Safe use

  • Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before assembling or hanging the shelving unit.
  • Choose suitable fixings and wall plugs (rawlplugs) for the wall material and the intended load; check that the surface is sound and level.
  • Anchor tall, modular or tip-prone shelving units to the wall; use anti-tip devices if supplied with the product.
  • Observe the maximum load indicated per shelf and for the unit as a whole; distribute weight by placing heavier items on the lower levels.
  • Ensure all shelves and supports are properly seated and level before loading.
  • Use a stable stepladder or stool to access high shelves; do not climb or hang from the structure.
  • Avoid items overhanging the edge or remaining unstable; use bookends or other stops when necessary.
  • If the product includes glass shelves or other fragile materials, handle them carefully and avoid impacts or point loads.

Storage and maintenance

  • Install and use the shelving unit in dry, ventilated areas, away from direct heat sources and excessive humidity.
  • Clean with a soft cloth and non-abrasive products; wipe spills immediately to prevent warping, swelling or rust.
  • Check screws, brackets and fixings periodically; retighten or replace any loose, damaged or corroded parts.
  • Before moving the shelving unit, empty the contents; lift it with assistance rather than dragging to avoid damage and loss of stability.
  • Protect shelf surfaces with mats or trays under plant pots and containers that may drip.

Usage restrictions

  • Do not use the shelving unit as a ladder, seat or anchorage point.
  • Do not exceed the recommended load or hang additional weight from the sides or the front.
  • Do not install wall-mounted shelves on weakened surfaces, with active damp, or that do not allow a secure fixing.
  • Do not place heavy, fragile or sharp objects on shelves at head height in walkways.
  • In homes with children, anchor shelving units and prevent climbing; place dangerous or heavy items up high.
  • Indoor use only unless the product specifies suitability for outdoor use.
