Safety warnings and precautions
Key risks
- Internal damage and data loss due to shocks, drops or vibrations, especially while the drive is operating.
- Damage to electronics due to electrostatic discharge when handling the drive without protection.
- Overheating due to insufficient ventilation or blocked vents.
- Damage from liquids, humidity or fine dust that can cause corrosion or short circuits.
- Data corruption from abrupt disconnections, power cuts or removing an external drive without ejecting it.
- Connector breakage from forcing them or using unsuitable cables/adaptors.
- For magnetic drives, potential interference from exposure to strong magnetic fields.
- Excessive noise and vibration if mounted with loose screws or misaligned.
Safe use
- Switch off and unplug the equipment before installing or removing the drive; handle it by the edges and avoid touching the contacts.
- Discharge your static electricity before touching the drive and other components.
- Secure the drive in the intended bay or bracket using the appropriate screws or mounts; insert connectors straight and without forcing.
- Ensure good airflow around the drive; do not cover it during use.
- Use compatible, good-condition cables and power supplies; avoid sharp bends or pulls.
- For external drives, use the Safely Remove Hardware option before disconnecting and avoid moving the drive while it is reading or writing.
- Keep the equipment stable; do not move or strike the drive while it is operating.
- Make regular backups and, where appropriate, use surge protection or a UPS during critical operations.
Storage and maintenance
- Store uninstalled drives in their anti-static bag and packaging, in a dry, clean, temperate place.
- Protect the drive against impacts during transport; do not stack or place weight on top.
- Keep the equipment’s fans and filters clean to aid cooling.
- Periodically check cables, ports and mounting screws; address any abnormal vibrations or noises.
- Clean the exterior with a dry cloth; do not use liquids, aerosols or abrasives, and do not open the casing.
- Check condition with manufacturer-recommended diagnostic tools and monitor temperatures where applicable.
- For long-term data preservation, periodically verify readability and refresh your backups.
Usage restrictions
- Do not open, pierce, strike or modify the drive.
- Do not use in environments with high humidity, condensation, airborne dust, continuous vibration or extreme temperatures.
- Do not expose magnetic drives to strong magnets or equipment with strong magnetic fields.
- Do not use damaged cables, makeshift adaptors or loose ports.
- Do not place the drive where it can be crushed, used to support other objects or blocked without ventilation.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets; it is not a toy.
- Avoid outdoor use without adequate protection against water and dust.
- Avoid handling the inside of the computer if you are unsure how to do so safely.
