Usage Warnings

Electronic Leak Detectors

Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Risk of electric shock if the device or its adaptor is handled with wet hands or in areas with standing water.
  • False alarms or detection failures due to improper placement, dirty sensors, or depleted batteries.
  • Equipment damage from exposure to water beyond its protection rating (prolonged immersion or direct jets of water).
  • Corrosion of contacts and probes caused by hard water, dirt, or aggressive cleaning agents.
  • Slips and falls when inspecting wet areas or areas with puddles after an alarm.
  • Interruption of alerts if the wireless or mains connection fails, or if the alarm volume is insufficient for the environment.
  • Battery hazards (including button cells): ingestion by children, leakage, or overheating if damaged or incorrectly installed.
  • Risk of damaging plumbing or valves if handled without adequate knowledge.

Safe use

  • Place detectors at critical points (under sinks, washing machines, water heaters, stopcocks) on a flat, stable surface, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Avoid areas with frequent condensation or splashes unrelated to leaks that may trigger unnecessary alerts.
  • Keep electrical components away from potential flooding; use dry hands and disconnect from the mains before moving or cleaning the equipment.
  • Use only the recommended batteries or adaptors and observe polarity; do not mix new and used batteries.
  • Ensure the sensors have direct contact with the floor and are not covered by rugs, skirting boards, or objects that block water.
  • Test the system periodically by placing a few drops of water on the sensor; verify the alarm sound and, where applicable, the app notifications.
  • Route and secure cables and probes to prevent trips or accidental tugs.
  • In the event of an alarm, if it is safe, shut off the water supply and dry the area before touching nearby sockets or electrical equipment.
  • If the equipment operates a shut-off valve, check its free movement and closing direction as per the manufacturer's manual.
  • When a fixed electrical connection or work on the plumbing is required, use qualified personnel.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store units and spares in a dry, ventilated place, away from sources of heat, extreme humidity, or frost.
  • Replace the batteries as soon as a low battery is indicated or as recommended by the manufacturer; remove the batteries if the device will not be used for long periods.
  • Periodically clean the contacts and the sensor base with a dry cloth; avoid abrasive or corrosive products.
  • Check the condition of cables, mounts, and probes; replace any damaged or corroded parts.
  • If the exterior of the device gets wet, dry it before returning it to service; do not use direct heat to speed up drying.
  • If the device is smart, keep the app and firmware up to date and verify the connection after router or network changes.
  • Carry out tests after moves, building works, or modifications to the plumbing to confirm coverage and placement.

Usage restrictions

  • Do not use the detector submerged continuously or outdoors without adequate protection against water, dust, and temperature.
  • Do not use the equipment with liquids other than water (oils, solvents, antifreeze, or salt water) unless expressly specified by the manufacturer.
  • Do not cover or conceal the sensors under rugs, furniture without clearance, or sealants that prevent contact with water.
  • Do not open, modify, or repair the device; do not splice cables or bypass safety features.
  • Do not place it next to sources of extreme heat, highly corrosive vapours, or flames.
  • Keep batteries and small parts out of the reach of children and pets.
  • For large areas or multiple risk points, do not rely on a single unit; deploy multiple detectors according to the space.
  • Avoid installing it in places where frequent hosing down or steam cleaning would cause constant alerts.
