Safety warnings and precautions

Main hazards

  • Cuts or punctures from the tip slipping off the screw head.
  • Damage to the screw or work surface from using an unsuitable tip type or size.
  • Electric shock when working near live circuits with non-insulated tools.
  • Ejection of particles, rust or swarf towards the eyes and face during driving or removing screws.
  • Injuries from applying excessive force or using the tool as a lever, chisel or punch.
  • Fatigue and discomfort in the wrist and forearm due to awkward postures or prolonged use.

Safe use

  • Always choose the correct type and size of screwdriver or bit; check it fully engages in the screw head recess before turning.
  • Keep the handle dry and free of grease; hold firmly and align the tool with the axis of the screw.
  • Apply controlled pressure and turn smoothly to prevent slippage (cam-out).
  • Wear eye protection whenever there is a risk of particles or when working with rusty screws.
  • If working near electricity, isolate the supply whenever possible and use insulated screwdrivers designed for that environment; avoid touching exposed metal parts.
  • Do not strike the screwdriver or use spanners, tubes or other levers to increase torque, unless clearly specified by the manufacturer.
  • Ensure the tip is not rounded or damaged; replace it if it does not grip properly. On models with interchangeable bits, ensure it is correctly locked in place.
  • Keep your other hand and body out of the tool’s potential slip path to prevent injury if it slips.
  • With hard or seized screws, prepare the area (cleaning, penetrating oil) or use dedicated tools to loosen them before forcing the screwdriver.
  • When working at height, tether the tool to prevent accidental drops.

Storage and maintenance

  • Clean the tip and handle after use to remove dirt, oils and filings.
  • Store in a dry, ventilated place; protect from moisture to minimise corrosion.
  • Keep away from heat sources and prolonged direct sunlight that could degrade the handle.
  • Organise screwdrivers and bits in cases or racks; use tip protectors when available.
  • Inspect periodically for: cracks in the handle, a bent shaft, a chipped or rounded tip and, on insulated models, possible damage to the coating. Remove defective tools from service.
  • If the tip is magnetised, remove any adhering filings and keep it away from magnetic media and sensitive sensors when not in use.

Restrictions on use

  • Do not use the screwdriver as a lever, chisel, punch, scraper, or to open tins or lids.
  • Do not work on live circuits unless the tool is suitable for that purpose and safety measures are in place; preferably, isolate the power.
  • Do not modify, heat or sharpen the tip; do not remove handle coatings or insulation.
  • Do not attach makeshift extensions (tubes, spanners) to increase torque.
  • Do not use screwdrivers with a loose handle, worn tip or damaged shaft.
  • Do not use magnetised tips near magnetic media or sensitive components if their operation could be affected.
  • Keep out of reach of children; if used by children, ensure adult supervision.
