Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Cuts and punctures when handling the cutting wheel and the sharp edges of the freshly cut pipe.
- Projection of swarf and burrs that can affect the eyes and skin.
- Finger entrapment in the clamping or ratchet mechanism.
- Slippage of the pipe cutter on the pipe, with possible impacts or damage to the installation.
- Deformation or breakage of the pipe due to excessive pressure, with possible leaks of water, gas or other fluids.
- Risk of burns if the pipe or its contents are hot.
- Repetitive exertion in confined spaces that may cause fatigue or loss of control.
Safe use
- Choose a pipe cutter suitable for the pipe material and diameter; use compatible cutting wheels.
- Before starting, check that the tool has no cracks, play or rust, and that the spindle turns smoothly.
- Wear eye protection and close-fitting gloves; avoid loose clothing that could catch.
- Make the line safe: shut off the supply, depressurise and drain the pipe; allow it to cool if it has carried hot fluids.
- Mark the cut area, clean the surface and secure the pipe so it does not rotate or move.
- Increase pressure gradually and rotate with smooth, even movements; do not force it or use extension bars to gain leverage.
- Keep hands away from the path of the wheel; avoid touching the freshly cut edge and de-burr with the appropriate tool.
- Remove and safely dispose of burrs and swarf to prevent cuts and blockages in the system.
Storage and maintenance
- Clean the tool after each use, removing swarf, material residues and moisture.
- Apply a light lubricant to the spindle and moving parts to maintain smooth operation.
- Periodically check the condition of the cutting wheel and rollers; replace worn or damaged parts.
- Protect the cutting edge when not in use and store the pipe cutter in a clean, dry place.
- Avoid impacts and loads that could misalign the mechanism.
- Use only compatible spare parts and assemble components following the tool manufacturer’s instructions.
Usage restrictions
- Do not use the pipe cutter on pipes in service: shut off the supply, depressurise and drain before working on them.
- Do not use it on materials for which it is not designed; verify compatibility with steel, copper, aluminium, PVC or others.
- Do not use the tool as a spanner, clamp, lever or hammer, nor attach it to powered tools unless specified.
- Do not work in areas without sufficient lighting or without stable support.
- Do not allow use by minors; inexperienced persons should use it under supervision.
- Do not continue working if you detect cracks, excessive play or loss of alignment in the tool.
