Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Ejection of the rivet mandrel when it snaps, posing a risk of eye injury.
- Trapping and pinching at the nosepiece, jaws and arms when closing the tool.
- Cuts from burrs on the rivet and the metal workpieces to be joined.
- The nosepiece slipping on the surface if not held perpendicular, causing knocks or defective joints.
- Rivet or tool breakage due to using unsuitable diameters or materials.
- Hand and wrist fatigue and overexertion from repetitive use or excessive force.
- Falling mandrels or parts during work at height.
Safe use
- Always wear safety glasses; use close-fitting, cut-resistant gloves when handling sheet metal and rivets.
- Select the nosepiece and rivet compatible with the diameter and grip range recommended for the application.
- Secure the parts with clamps or in a vice; do not attempt to rivet unstable parts one-handed.
- Keep fingers away from the nosepiece and joints; close the arms in a controlled manner.
- Point the tool away from your face and other people; use and empty the mandrel collector if available.
- Hold the riveter perpendicular to the surface; check the rivet seats correctly before applying force.
- Apply force progressively; do not add extensions to the handles or strike the tool.
- Deburr the holes and remove swarf before inserting the rivet to avoid poor grip.
- Collect broken mandrels in a container; they can cut or puncture if left on the floor.
- If you notice irregular gripping, creaking or play, stop work and check the nosepiece, jaws and rivet.
- Work in a well-lit area, clear of cables, oils and metal debris that could cause trips or slips.
Storage and maintenance
- Clean the nosepiece and jaws of swarf and dust after each use to maintain a reliable grip.
- Periodically check nosepieces and jaws for wear; replace them if they slip or excessively mark mandrels.
- Lightly lubricate shafts and joints according to the tool manufacturer’s instructions.
- Check and re-tighten screws and pins if you detect play.
- Empty and clean the mandrel reservoir, if fitted, to prevent jams.
- Store it dry, with the handles closed and locked if it has a locking catch; protect it from moisture and corrosive environments.
- Avoid extreme temperatures that could damage the grips.
- Keep the tool out of the reach of children.
Restrictions on use
- Not suitable for minors; requires strength and coordination.
- Do not use with rivets beyond the tool’s capacity.
- Do not use the riveter as a lever, hammer or wire cutter.
- Do not work near bare live conductors or energised equipment.
- Avoid riveting overhead without controlling the drop of the mandrel and without eye protection.
- Do not modify the tool or remove guards or collectors.
- Do not use the tool if damaged, oxidised or with loose grips.
- Do not use rivets that are deformed, dirty or of incorrect diameter; an improper joint may fail.
