Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Ejection of loose bristles, particles or swarf that can cause eye injuries or cuts.
- Cuts and punctures from stiff or metal bristles and from sharp edges of the workpiece.
- Inhalation of dust, rust or detached debris, with possible irritation of skin and airways.
- Brush slips or snags causing knuckle impacts and loss of control.
- Possible sparking when rubbing metal on metal in the presence of flammable vapours.
- Handle breakage or brush deformation due to wear, leading to unexpected failures.
- Fatigue and discomfort from repetitive strain in the hand and wrist.
- Surface contamination when mixing uses (transfer of oils, rust or chemicals to other parts).
Safe use
- Inspect the brush before each use: firm bristles and a handle with no cracks or looseness.
- Wear safety goggles; sturdy gloves and a filtering face mask when dust is generated.
- Secure the workpiece on a stable surface or with clamps to prevent slipping.
- Work with controlled strokes and moderate pressure, brushing away from your body and hands.
- Select a brush suitable for the material and desired finish; test first in an inconspicuous area.
- Keep the work area clear and other people out of the brushing path.
- Avoid abruptly brushing edges that could snag the bristles; follow the grain where applicable.
- Keep away from flames, sparks and flammable vapours, especially with metal brushes.
- Do not use with solvents or chemicals that attack the bristles or handle; follow the chemical's instructions.
- Take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and maintain control.
- Do not use the brush as a lever, hammer or impact tool.
Storage and maintenance
- Remove debris and dust after use; shake or clean with another brush. Avoid blowing fine dust.
- Dry thoroughly if it becomes damp to prevent corrosion, mould or odours.
- Store in a dry, ventilated place and out of the way; protect the bristles with a cover or hang to prevent deformation and accidental punctures.
- Separate and label brushes by materials or uses to avoid cross-contamination.
- Replace the brush if it sheds excessive bristles, they are badly deformed, the handle cracks or visible rust is present.
- Keep out of reach of children and away from sources of heat or flames.
- For metal brushes, minimise humidity during storage to prevent rusting.
Restrictions of use
- Not suitable for contact with food or for personal hygiene.
- Do not use on energised electrical equipment or on very hot surfaces.
- Do not attach to machines or powered tools; manual use only.
- Avoid use near open flames or in the presence of flammable vapours or dust.
- Do not use metal bristles on delicate, painted or polished surfaces; choose soft bristles if appropriate.
- Do not allow use by minors without adult supervision.
- Do not use if the brush is damaged or if the task requires a different type of brush than the one available.
