Usage Warnings

Water Softeners

Warnings and safety precautions

Main risks

  • Leaks and overflows that can cause water damage if connections, drain hoses or overflow outlets are not properly installed or become blocked.
  • Water contamination from backflow if the drain or bypass is not correctly configured.
  • Increased sodium in softened water, not suitable for certain sensitive uses (e.g., aquariums, watering sensitive plants, or when limiting sodium in drinking water is desired).
  • Electrical hazard on mains-powered models if handled with wet hands or with damaged plugs/leads.
  • Injury from handling salt bags (weight) and possible eye or skin irritation from salt dust.
  • Damage to the unit and the installation from operating outside the recommended pressure or temperature ranges, or from improper hardness/regeneration settings.
  • Breakage due to frost or exposure to high temperatures and direct sunlight.
  • Slippery surfaces and corrosion around the unit due to brine spills.

Safe use

  • Install the water softener on a stable surface, with access to a drain and isolation valves. If you lack plumbing experience, consider installation by qualified personnel.
  • Follow the direction of flow indicated by the manufacturer and check the bypass position before turning on the supply.
  • Carry out start-up and flushing as per the manual. After maintenance work, let the water run for the recommended time before drinking it or using it for cooking.
  • Use only suitable regenerating salt for the unit; do not add detergents, additives or chemicals to the brine tank.
  • Replenish salt without overfilling and carefully break up any ‘bridges’ or clumps formed, using non-sharp tools.
  • Ensure the drain line is unobstructed and securely fixed to prevent backflow and blockages. Keep the discharge point clean.
  • Do not exceed the pressure and temperature ranges indicated by the manufacturer; install protective devices if necessary.
  • Disconnect the electrical supply and shut off the water before handling the inside of the unit.
  • Consider maintaining an unsoftened water outlet for uses where a low sodium content is preferred (e.g., aquariums, irrigation or certain consumption).
  • Avoid connecting the unit to hot water lines.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store salt bags in a dry place, out of reach of children and pets. Avoid moisture to prevent caking.
  • Periodically check the salt level, clean sediment from the brine tank, and sanitise the system at the frequency recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Regularly check hoses, clamps and valves for leaks, cracks or corrosion. Verify that the drain and overflow are not obstructed.
  • If your installation includes pre-filters, clean or replace them according to use and the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Protect the unit from frost, excessive heat and direct sunlight. Keep the area ventilated to reduce corrosion.
  • For prolonged absences, follow the specified shutdown procedure (bypass and/or regeneration). On return, carry out start-up and flushing.
  • After power cuts, check the time and regeneration programmes to ensure correct operation.

Restrictions on use

  • Do not use the water softener to make water microbiologically safe; this equipment does not remove pathogens.
  • Do not use softened water for aquariums or for watering salt-sensitive plants; in such cases, use unsoftened water.
  • Do not add bleaches, acids or other chemicals to the brine tank, nor modify the unit.
  • Do not operate the unit outside the specified pressure and temperature limits, nor obstruct vents or lids.
  • Do not install outdoors without adequate protection against weather and frost.
  • Do not allow children to handle the unit or the salt without adult supervision.
  • Do not place heavy objects on the lid, nor use the appliance as a platform or step.
