Safety warnings and precautions
Main hazards
- Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from exhaust gases; odourless and invisible.
- Electrocution from contact with live parts, use in damp environments, or damaged cables.
- Backfeed to the mains supply, posing a risk to people and equipment if connected incorrectly.
- Fire or explosion due to improper handling of fuels and sparks near the equipment.
- Burns from contact with surfaces and exhaust components that reach high temperatures during and after use.
- Hearing damage from high noise levels and discomfort from vibration.
- Damage to connected appliances due to overload or inrush surges if the generator’s capacity is exceeded.
- Impacts, crush/pinch injuries, or tipping while moving or during start-up.
Safe use
- Use the generator only outdoors and at a sufficient distance from windows, doors and air intakes. Point the exhaust away from people and openings.
- Place it on a firm, level and stable surface, with clear space around it for ventilation. Do not cover or enclose it while running.
- Keep the unit and connections dry. Do not use it in rain or on wet surfaces, and do not handle it with wet hands.
- Connect appliances using outdoor-rated extension leads with an earth connection and of suitable cross-sectional area. Fully unwind the leads and avoid joints or multi-socket power strips.
- Add loads gradually and do not exceed the continuous power rating specified by the manufacturer.
- Switch off the engine and allow it to cool before refuelling. Refuel outdoors, away from flames, sparks and heat sources. Wipe up any spills immediately.
- Keep combustible materials away from the generator. Keep an appropriate fire extinguisher to hand.
- Wear hearing protection and gloves when handling or moving the unit. Avoid contact with hot and moving parts.
- If you are going to supply a home or premises installation, do so only via a transfer switch installed by a qualified electrician to prevent backfeed.
- Consider installing CO detectors in occupied areas near the place of use.
Storage and maintenance
- Store the generator in a dry, ventilated place and out of walkways. Keep it away from heat sources and flames.
- Store fuel in suitable, well-sealed and labelled containers, in a cool, ventilated area, away from sparks and direct sunlight.
- For long-term storage, drain the tank or use a fuel stabiliser in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Switch off, disconnect all loads, and allow to cool completely before any inspection, cleaning or moving.
- Periodically check the condition of cables, plugs, fuel hoses, filters and fastenings. Replace damaged or worn components in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Keep the unit clean and remove dust, leaves and debris that could obstruct ventilation or the exhaust.
- If the generator includes a battery, charge it with a suitable charger in a ventilated area and check its condition periodically.
- Carry out occasional test runs outdoors to verify operation, without connecting sensitive equipment.
Restrictions on use
- Do not use the generator indoors or in semi-enclosed spaces (garages, basements, storage rooms, caravans, enclosed terraces), even if doors or windows are open.
- Do not use it in rain, snow, or on surfaces with standing water. Do not handle it with wet hands.
- Do not connect the generator directly to wall sockets or to the consumer unit without an appropriate transfer system. Do not use "male-to-male" leads.
- Do not cover air outlets or the exhaust, and do not place the unit next to flammable materials or vapours.
- Do not exceed the generator’s maximum power or connect equipment that demands more than it can supply. Some sensitive devices may require additional protection.
- Do not leave the generator running unattended for prolonged periods or while sleeping.
- Do not transport or move the unit while it is running. Secure it properly during transport.
- Do not remove guards, modify the exhaust silencer, or tamper with the carburettor or safety systems.
- Do not use the unit if you detect fuel leaks, damaged cables, or structural damage to the casing.
- Do not allow it to be operated by minors or by persons with reduced capacity for attention, or under the influence of alcohol or medication.
