Safety warnings and precautions

Key risks

  • Load drop due to overloading, incorrect attachment, or unintended release.
  • Impact from load swing or from the hook itself being flung.
  • Pinch and cut injuries when handling the throat, latch, or slings/chains.
  • Accidental latch opening due to impacts, dirt/contamination, or spring wear.
  • Hook failure due to deformation, cracks, wear, corrosion, or illegible markings.
  • Loss of hold due to off-axis pulling, side loading, or twisting.
  • Deterioration from extreme temperatures, welding spatter, or chemical agents.
  • Electrical hazard if operating near energised lines or equipment with metallic components.
  • When working at height, risk of tools or components falling if not secured.

Safe use

  • Inspect before each use: ensure there are no cracks, deformation, excessive wear, corrosion, abnormal play, and that the latch and pins operate correctly.
  • Select a hook with sufficient capacity for the intended load and compatible with the sling, chain, wire rope, or ring (appropriate diameter and shape).
  • Place the load in the bottom of the hook; if fitted with a latch, keep it fully closed and do not bear the load on it.
  • Keep the line of force aligned with the hook body, avoiding side loads, torsion, sudden jerks, and impacts.
  • Control slinging angles and protect contact areas against sharp edges to prevent cutting and slippage.
  • Lift progressively, ensuring the load is balanced and that no one is in the hoisting area; cordon off and signpost the area where appropriate.
  • Avoid load swing and do not stand under suspended loads or between the load and an obstruction.
  • When working at height, use hooks suitable for the personal fall-protection system and check closure/locking at a compatible anchorage point.
  • Use personal protective equipment appropriate to the task (e.g. gloves, safety footwear, helmet, and eye protection).

Storage and maintenance

  • Clean after use to remove dirt, moisture, and particles that could affect latch closure.
  • Dry thoroughly and store in a dry, ventilated place, protected from chemical agents, salt-laden atmospheres, and intense direct radiation.
  • Transport and store without parts striking one another; use containers, racking, or hangers to prevent damage.
  • Do not paint or coat in a way that hides cracks or wear; keep identification and capacity markings legible.
  • Lightly lubricate pins or springs only if recommended by the manufacturer, and do not over-apply to avoid attracting dirt.
  • Set periodic inspections according to use and environment; remove from service and quarantine any doubtful hook until checked.
  • Remove from service immediately if there is deformation, cracking, abnormal latch opening/closing, significant throat wear, or deep corrosion.
  • Protect from extreme temperatures and grinding or welding sparks during storage.

Restrictions of use

  • Do not exceed the rated load capacity or use the hook as an improvised anchorage point.
  • Do not lift, transport, or suspend people.
  • Do not use if components are missing (latch, pins) or if the closure does not function correctly.
  • Do not use without a safety latch when required, or if the model originally incorporated one.
  • Do not hook directly over sharp edges or surfaces that could damage the sling or the hook without proper protection.
  • Do not weld, drill, heat, straighten, or modify the hook.
  • Do not apply side loads, torsion, or diagonal pull unless the assembly is specifically designed for it.
  • Do not combine with incompatible accessories or recreational-use items (e.g. non-industrial carabiners).
  • Do not use in chemical environments or temperature ranges not specified by the manufacturer.
  • Do not work near electrical sources without adequate insulation measures and safe distances.
