Exercise Bikes and Elliptical Trainers

Warnings and safety precautions

Main risks

  • Falls when getting on or off the machine, especially if the pedals or footplates are moving.
  • Entanglement or pinching in the pedals, cranks, flywheel/belts and the moving joints of ellipticals.
  • Impacts from contact with moving parts while training or when attempting to stop them by hand.
  • Knee, back or shoulder injuries due to improper posture or incorrect saddle, handlebar or stride adjustments.
  • Overexertion, dizziness, cramps or dehydration due to excessive intensity or insufficient ventilation.
  • Instability, vibrations or equipment movement due to poor assembly or an uneven floor.
  • Electrical hazards and tripping over the lead on powered models, as well as moisture damage.
  • Risks to children and pets if they access moving parts or the workout area.

Safe use

  • Install and adjust the equipment following the manufacturer’s instructions; check it is stable and free of play before starting.
  • Place the machine on a flat, firm surface; a non-slip mat helps improve stability.
  • Adjust the saddle, handlebar or stride length before getting on and ensure that the pins and locks are securely fastened.
  • Wear closed sports footwear and clothing that will not snag; secure laces and avoid loose garments around moving parts.
  • Keep hands, feet and clothing away from cranks, pedals, belts and joints; do not remove covers or guards.
  • Get on and off only when the pedals/footplates are stationary; reduce the resistance and allow the movement to come to a gradual stop.
  • Start at low intensity and increase progressively; include a warm-up and a cool-down.
  • Hydrate during the session and ventilate the room; if you feel dizzy, pain or short of breath, stop exercising.
  • Keep a clear area around you to move safely and avoid hitting walls or objects.
  • If the model uses a lead, route it to prevent trips and plug it into a socket in good condition, away from water sources.
  • Check that pedal straps or toe cages, if present, are adjusted to your foot; on ellipticals, hold the appropriate handles.

Storage and maintenance

  • Position and store the equipment indoors in a dry, ventilated area; avoid humidity, condensation and direct heat sources.
  • Disconnect from the mains before cleaning or moving the equipment, if applicable.
  • Wipe off sweat after each use with a soft, slightly damp cloth; avoid abrasive or corrosive products.
  • Periodically check fasteners, pedals, arms and covers; tighten or replace parts if you detect play or damage.
  • Monitor the condition of pedals, retention straps and guards; replace any component that is cracked, broken or heavily worn.
  • Lubricate or adjust only when indicated by the manufacturer and using compatible products.
  • To move the machine, use the transport wheels provided and keep the pedals immobilised; move slowly to avoid tipping.
  • On folding models, secure the locks before transporting or storing.
  • Using a protective mat helps reduce slippage and vibrations, and protects the floor.

Usage restrictions

  • Keep children and pets away during use; minors should only use the equipment under adult supervision.
  • Do not use the machine if parts are missing, there are cracks, unusual noises, looseness or damaged guards.
  • Do not use it outdoors or in damp areas unless expressly indicated by the manufacturer.
  • Do not modify the device or remove covers or protective mechanisms.
  • Do not allow two people on it at the same time, and do not use it for purposes other than exercise.
  • Do not use it barefoot, in flip-flops or heels; avoid jewellery or accessories that could snag.
  • Avoid using it under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or when extremely fatigued.
  • Observe the maximum user weight specified by the manufacturer.
  • If you have heart conditions, recent injuries or are pregnant, exercise moderately and follow the advice of your healthcare professional.
  • Stop using the equipment if you experience sharp pain, severe dizziness, numbness or any unusual symptom.
