Sound and Vibration Testing Equipment

Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Prolonged exposure to high noise levels during measurement that may damage hearing.
  • Approaching moving machinery, with a risk of entanglement, impact and flying objects.
  • Detachment of probes, magnets or adaptors on rotating parts that may be flung out.
  • Contact with hot, rough or intensely vibrating surfaces that can cause burns or loss of grip.
  • Electrical hazard from proximity to panels, terminals or live cables.
  • Trips or falls caused by cables, tripods, or by moving without attention to the surroundings.
  • Equipment damage from moisture, dust or extreme temperatures, with potential unexpected failures.
  • Leakage, overheating or deterioration of batteries.
  • Direct ear exposure to acoustic calibrators or very powerful sources.

Safe use

  • Assess the environment before starting and keep clear of moving parts and entrapment zones.
  • Wear hearing protection when sound levels may be high or unpredictable.
  • Fit and remove sensors with the machine stopped whenever possible; if it must be running, keep hands, clothing and cabling away.
  • Attach accelerometers and probes only to clean, stable surfaces, using the accessories provided by the manufacturer.
  • Do not place sensors or magnets on shafts, couplings, fans or other parts that may rotate or eject them.
  • Hold the equipment securely and, if available, use a strap or wrist strap to prevent drops.
  • Keep the microphone at a safe distance from loudspeakers, sirens and nozzles; never bring it close to the ear.
  • Route cables so they are not taut and do not cross walkways; coil the excess to prevent snagging.
  • Protect the microphone with a windscreen outdoors and avoid impacts or blowing directly onto the capsule.
  • Check the battery level and, where appropriate, perform a reference check with a compatible calibrator as specified by the manufacturer.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store the equipment clean, dry and in its case; fit the microphone cap or cover to protect the capsule.
  • Keep away from moisture, dust, continuous vibration and sources of heat.
  • Clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth; do not use solvents or blow compressed air directly onto the microphone.
  • If it gets wet, dry immediately and allow to air before use; do not apply direct heat.
  • Periodically inspect cables, connectors, magnets, bases and mounts; replace any that are damaged or worn.
  • Charge with the appropriate charger; do not cover the equipment during charging and avoid prolonged unattended charging.
  • Remove the batteries if it will not be used for an extended period; dispose of batteries that are swollen, corroded or leaking.
  • Record the date of the last accuracy verification and repeat it at the frequency recommended by the manufacturer.

Restrictions on use

  • Do not use as personal protective equipment or for medical or clinical diagnostic purposes.
  • Do not insert the microphone into the ear canal or bring it excessively close to loudspeakers or nozzles.
  • Do not use in potentially explosive atmospheres or in the presence of flammable gases, vapours or dust, unless the equipment is expressly rated for it.
  • Do not expose the equipment to heavy rain, immersion or conditions outside the temperature and humidity ranges specified by the manufacturer.
  • Do not modify the product or use incompatible or makeshift accessories.
  • Do not mount sensors on flaking paint, greasy surfaces or corrosion that compromises secure fixing.
  • Do not work at height without securing the equipment and cables to prevent dropped objects.
  • Keep out of reach of children; during training activities, use under adult supervision.
