Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Punctures, cuts or bruises from tips, indenters, edges and metal parts.
- Damage to the surface or workpiece when applying pressure, scratching or penetrating more than intended.
- Incorrect readings due to poor calibration, extreme temperature, humidity, vibration, dirt, flaking paint or magnetic/electrical interference.
- Eye hazard from laser pointers present on some models.
- Entrapment or impact injuries when securing test pieces, fixtures or accessories.
- Magnetic fields from probes/magnets: sudden attraction of metal fragments and possible interference with implanted medical devices.
- Skin or eye irritation from coupling gels or reagents, as well as accidental spillages.
- Electrical hazard when working near energised equipment or exposed conductors.
Safe use
- Before starting, inspect the equipment, cables and probes; do not use it if it shows signs of damage or looseness.
- Calibrate or zero using the appropriate standard or surface, and repeat the verification when changing material or if environmental conditions change.
- Prepare the measurement area: clean, dry and stable; remove dust, loose rust and grease.
- Select the appropriate probe or method for the intended material and range; avoid forcing adaptors or threads.
- Apply the probe perpendicularly with controlled pressure; do not strike or use the equipment as a marking tool.
- Secure the workpiece firmly or use supports; keep fingers away from the point of contact.
- Do not look into the beam or aim the laser at people or animals if the equipment has a pointer.
- If using gels or reagents, wear gloves and eye protection, ventilate the area and clean residues after measurement.
- Avoid measuring on hot, moving or wet surfaces, or near energised parts.
- Disconnect the equipment or remove the battery before changing tips, probes or accessories.
- Repeat any anomalous measurements and, where appropriate, confirm with a second method to avoid decisions based on incorrect readings.
Storage and maintenance
- Clean probes and housings with a soft cloth; avoid harsh solvents and direct compressed air on sensors.
- Fit protectors on tips and indenters and store the equipment in its case to prevent knocks.
- Keep the unit in a dry place at a moderate temperature; avoid condensation and allow it to acclimatise before use after temperature changes.
- Store magnets and magnetic probes away from cards, watches and sensitive electronic devices.
- Periodically check tips, cables and connectors for wear; replace any damaged or blunted items.
- Carry out periodic calibrations with suitable standards according to usage, and record the last verification.
- Remove the batteries if the unit will not be used for an extended period, and use appropriate chargers for rechargeable batteries.
- Dispose of gel or reagent waste following the manufacturer’s instructions and avoid spillages.
Restrictions of use
- Product intended for technical use; keep out of reach of children.
- To be used by adults familiarised with the measurement method; in workshops or on site, work with appropriate supervision.
- Do not use in atmospheres with flammable dust or vapours unless the equipment is expressly rated for this.
- Do not immerse or expose to heavy rain unless the model is designed for this.
- People with pacemakers or other active implants should avoid proximity to powerful probes or magnets and follow the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Do not apply to skin, animals, foodstuffs or objects of high aesthetic value unless explicitly specified for the product.
- Discontinue use if the equipment is dropped, comes into contact with liquids or displays inconsistent readings, until its operation has been verified.
- Do not modify or improvise tips, adaptors or cables; use only compatible accessories in good condition.
- Observe the ranges and conditions of use specified by the manufacturer to avoid damage and unreliable results.
