Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Pinches and cuts when closing the jaws, from the tips/blades of the calliper, and from sharp edges of parts.
- Knocks or snagging if attempting to measure near moving machinery.
- Incorrect readings due to dirt, wear, impacts, thermal expansion, or incorrect unit selection (mm/inch).
- Injury from the instrument or the workpiece falling onto hands or feet.
- Corrosion or sticking of the slide that may cause loss of control.
- On button-cell models: risk of ingestion, leakage, or overheating due to short-circuit.
Safe use
- Inspect before use: smooth sliding, no play, intact tips, and clean measuring surfaces.
- Check zero and the unit of measure before each use; avoid warming the workpiece with your hands so as not to affect the reading.
- Secure the workpiece stably on a firm surface; do not measure moving parts, and stop the machine before bringing the calliper close.
- Keep fingers out of the jaws' closing path and apply light pressure without forcing.
- Do not use the calliper as pliers, a clamp, a lever, a marker, or a cutting tool.
- Wear safety glasses when there are chips or fragments; use cut-resistant gloves when handling parts with sharp edges, removing them if there is a risk of snagging with rotating elements.
- Digital models: secure the battery cover; replace the battery when low; do not mix new and used batteries or short-circuit the contacts; dispose of batteries at appropriate collection points.
Storage and maintenance
- Clean after each use with a soft cloth; remove dust and swarf, and dry any moisture.
- Apply a light film of anti-corrosion oil to moving parts; avoid excess on the measuring faces.
- Store the calliper in its case, in a dry place, protected from shocks and vibration.
- Avoid extreme temperatures, high humidity, and exposure to aggressive chemicals; do not immerse it in water or solvents.
- Periodically check for possible play, damage, or misalignment; if detected, stop using the instrument until it has been inspected or replaced.
- On electronic models, protect against impacts and splashes; remove the battery if it will not be used for prolonged periods.
Restrictions of use
- Not a toy; keep out of the reach of children and pets.
- Do not measure rotating parts or in areas with a risk of entrapment.
- Do not use it as a hammer, lever, clamp, screwdriver, or marking rule.
- Not suitable for electrical work or as an insulating device.
- Do not use it in contact with food or for measurements on the body.
- Battery handling and replacement must be carried out by an adult, using the type specified by the manufacturer.
