Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Splashes or contact with potentially irritant or corrosive liquids during sampling.
  • Inaccurate readings due to lack of calibration, a dirty or damaged probe, or out-of-range temperature, which can lead to incorrect decisions in water treatment or other processes.
  • Ingress of liquid into the meter body or connectors, potentially causing equipment failure or short-circuiting of the batteries.
  • Breakage of the probe or fragile components, with risk of cuts and loss of watertight integrity.
  • Cross-contamination between samples due to insufficient rinsing of the probe.
  • Burns or thermal shock when measuring very hot or very cold fluids.
  • Trips or snags on probe cables in work environments.
  • Exposure to vapours from chemicals used for cleaning or calibration, which may be irritating.

Safe use

  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific model and use the equipment within the specified temperature and conductivity ranges.
  • Before measuring, inspect the probe, cable and connectors; do not use the equipment if you observe cracks, corrosion or damaged insulation.
  • Rinse the probe with distilled or deionised water between samples to minimise cross-contamination; remove excess water without knocking it.
  • Calibrate with appropriate standard solutions at the recommended frequency and at the temperature specified for those solutions.
  • Avoid immersing the instrument beyond the probe's immersion mark; keep the meter body and connectors dry.
  • Keep the cable free of strain and twists, and hold the probe so it does not strike the walls or the bottom of the container.
  • Wear gloves and safety goggles when handling unknown samples, brines, cleaners or calibration solutions.
  • If the equipment gets wet, remove the batteries and allow it to dry completely before using it again.

Storage and maintenance

  • Clean the probe after use according to the manufacturer's recommendations; avoid abrasives, strong solvents or metal tools.
  • Dry the outside of the meter and the connectors before storing it; use protective caps and cases where provided.
  • Store the equipment in a clean, dry and well-ventilated place, away from heat sources, direct sunlight and dust.
  • Keep calibration solutions tightly closed and check their expiry date to avoid drift.
  • Periodically inspect cables and connections; replace worn or damaged components.
  • For prolonged storage, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and check their condition before putting the equipment back into service.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions on probe storage; some models require a protective cap or a specific storage solution.

Restrictions on use

  • Not suitable as a toy nor for use by children without supervision by an adult familiar with the equipment.
  • Do not use the conductivity meter as a permanent in-line sensor unless it is designed for that purpose.
  • Do not use the equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres or near ignition sources.
  • Do not measure pressurised or boiling fluids, or those outside the temperature range specified for the probe.
  • Do not use the instrument for food contact, nor for medical purposes or on the human or animal body.
  • Do not pull the cable to remove the probe nor use it as a stirrer.
  • Do not immerse the meter body if it is not submersible, nor exceed its protection rating.
  • Do not use cleaning or calibration solutions or chemicals that are incompatible with the probe materials.
