Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Breakage, shards and sharp edges that can cause cuts.
  • Thermal shock when moving from cold to hot or vice versa, with possible cracking or shattering.
  • Burns when handling very hot items or liquids just out of the microwave or oven, or hot items straight from the dishwasher.
  • Drops due to slipping when moving wet items or those stacked too high, with a risk of breakage.
  • Sparking in the microwave if the crockery has metallic details.
  • Build-up of dirt in cracks or on damaged surfaces that may contaminate food.

Safe use

  • Check each item for the manufacturer’s symbols and instructions (microwave, oven, dishwasher) and use it only as permitted.
  • Do not place crockery over direct flame, on grills or on hobs.
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes: do not immerse hot items in cold water or move them straight from the freezer to heat.
  • Use oven gloves or cloths to handle hot items, and check the temperature of soups and drinks before serving, especially to children.
  • Inspect before each use and remove any items with cracks, impact damage or chips.
  • Place items on flat, stable surfaces; avoid letting them overhang the edge of tables or worktops.
  • Handle with dry hands and avoid stacking too many items at once to reduce drops.
  • Avoid abrasive utensils or scouring pads that may scratch or weaken the surface.

Storage and maintenance

  • Wash before first use and after each use with a soft sponge and non-abrasive detergent.
  • Allow items to cool before washing; do not use cold water on hot crockery.
  • If using a dishwasher, space items apart to prevent them from knocking into each other, and use a suitable programme.
  • Dry completely before storing to avoid prolonged moisture.
  • Stack in a stable manner and not too high; use separators or thin cloths between items to minimise rubbing.
  • Regularly check the condition of the crockery and discard damaged or heavily worn items.

Usage restrictions

  • Do not use items with metallic details in the microwave, or where this is not expressly indicated.
  • Do not use in the oven unless the item clearly indicates it is suitable.
  • Do not use crockery over open flames, barbecues, induction, ceramic or halogen hobs.
  • Do not use cracked or chipped items for contact with food or for very hot drinks.
  • Do not use crockery as a cutting surface or for striking or opening containers.
  • Keep heavy or glass items out of reach of children, and supervise use with very hot food or drinks.
  • Avoid storing highly acidic or salty foods for long periods in items with damaged surfaces.
