Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Cuts and punctures when handling the blade, especially during opening, closing or cleaning.
  • Accidental closure of folding knives if the lock is not engaged or fails.
  • Slips due to wet or greasy grips and from applying excessive force.
  • Loss of control of the tool when cutting unsuitable materials or on unstable surfaces.
  • Injuries to others from use near other people, or when passing the knife from hand to hand incorrectly.
  • Damage from drops or from leaving the tool on the edge of tables or elevated surfaces.
  • Corrosion and edge wear that increase the risk of slipping and breakage.

Safe use

  • Plan the cut and work on a firm surface; always cut away from your body and from the hand holding the material.
  • Keep your fingers out of the blade’s path and make short, controlled strokes, without rushing.
  • For folding knives, check that they are fully open and, if they have a lock, ensure it is engaged before use.
  • Hold the handle with a firm grip; use cut-resistant gloves and safety glasses when there is a risk of slipping, burrs or splinters.
  • Keep the edge in good condition; a blunt blade requires more force and increases the likelihood of an accident.
  • Do not use the knife as a lever, screwdriver, chisel, hammer, or to open tins or sealed cans.
  • Do not pull the blade towards you or cut over yourself; avoid sudden movements and abrupt changes of direction.
  • When passing the knife to another person, do so with the blade covered or folded and offer the handle first, giving a clear warning.
  • If a blade is damaged or bent, stop using it and replace it or repair the tool as appropriate.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store knives with a sheath or blade guard; folding knives should always be kept folded and, where applicable, with the lock engaged.
  • Keep them out of the reach and sight of children and pets, preferably in locked storage.
  • Clean after each use and dry completely to minimise corrosion; avoid prolonged moisture.
  • Occasionally lubricate the pivot and mechanisms of folding knives with a drop of tool-safe oil; wipe off any excess.
  • Periodically check the handle’s firmness, screws and any play; do not use the tool if you notice cracks, looseness or deformation.
  • Sharpen with appropriate tools and a controlled technique, keeping the edge facing away from your body and on a stable support.
  • For transport, use a sheath or case; do not carry loose knives in pockets or bags without protection.

Restrictions on use

  • Intended for use by adults with the necessary skill; minors must not use them.
  • Do not use under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or when tired or distracted.
  • Avoid using them in crowds or near other people and animals; keep a safe distance.
  • Do not use if the knife’s lock is not functioning correctly or if the blade is very blunt, chipped or corroded.
  • Do not expose to intense heat sources or flames that could damage the handle or alter the blade.
  • If they have been used for dirty tasks or outdoors, do not use them to cut food without careful prior cleaning.
