Safety warnings and precautions

Key risks

  • Punctures and cuts from the compass point and from edges of broken metal or plastic.
  • Slips while marking out that may cause hand injuries or damage to the work surface.
  • Finger pinches from joints, clamping screws or the slides of combination squares.
  • Loss or ejection of small parts (screws, leads, caps) during adjustment or transport.
  • Burrs, nicked edges or deformations that can cut or lead to inaccurate measurements.
  • Electrical hazard if metal tools are brought near live cables or energised equipment.
  • Splinters or fragments when marking on hard materials.

Safe use

  • Before starting, check there are no loose parts and that points and edges are in good condition.
  • Fit and remove the compass tip protector carefully and keep it fitted during transport.
  • Work on a stable surface; secure the paper or workpiece to prevent slipping.
  • Apply light, controlled pressure; do not force the compass to turn or use a square as a lever.
  • Keep hands clear of the point's path and point the tool away from your body and others.
  • Tighten screws and slides just enough to eliminate play without damaging the tool.
  • Avoid using metal compasses or squares near electrical installations; move away or switch off or isolate power before measuring or marking out.
  • If working on materials that may splinter, wear safety glasses.
  • Replace worn leads and damaged points to maintain controlled marking.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store the compass folded with a tip protector fitted; store squares flat or in a sleeve to prevent warping.
  • Keep in a clean, dry place; dry after cleaning to minimise corrosion.
  • Remove graphite, dust and adhesive residues with a soft cloth; avoid aggressive solvents that could damage plastics or finishes.
  • Apply a drop of light oil to joints and screws when needed; do not over-lubricate.
  • Periodically check that squares retain straight edges and correct angles; replace or adjust if damaged or out of true.
  • Protect any magnetic parts by avoiding contact with metal filings and sensitive electronic equipment.
  • Keep out of reach of children and avoid impacts that could misalign or break parts.

Restrictions of use

  • Not a toy; use by minors only under adult supervision.
  • Do not use to cut or to drill hard materials, or as a screwdriver, chisel or lever.
  • Do not carry the compass open, in pockets, or near the face.
  • Do not use on unstable or moving surfaces, or at height, without adequate securing of the workpieces.
  • Keep away from flames, heat sources and prolonged intense sunlight that could deform plastic components.
  • On models with magnetic parts, keep away from magnetic cards and data storage media.
  • Stop use immediately if any play, cracks or bent points are observed; do not resume use until the product has been repaired or replaced.
