Warnings and safety precautions
Key risks
- Cuts from contact with the exposed blade during adjustment, transport or cleaning.
- Ejection of shavings or splinters that may strike the eyes and skin.
- Loss of control due to slips, snags or excessively deep cuts.
- Pinch points between the tool, the workpiece and clamping systems.
- Hand and wrist fatigue due to repetitive strain or poor posture.
- Increased risk of slipping when the blade is dull, damaged or poorly secured.
Safe use
- Before starting, check that the blade is sharp, free of nicks and securely fastened; ensure there is no play in screws and handles.
- Secure the workpiece firmly (vice, clamps) and work on a stable surface at a comfortable height.
- Set a short blade projection for light cuts; increase gradually if necessary and avoid forcing the cut.
- Work preferably with the grain to reduce snags and tear-out.
- Always keep your hands behind the cutting edge and away from the cutting path.
- Remove nails, staples or other foreign objects from the wood beforehand.
- Wear safety glasses; consider a mask if fine dust is generated or if the wood is irritating. Wear close-fitting clothing and avoid loose sleeves.
- When changing or adjusting the blade, keep the edge protected and your hands dry; use a cloth or snug-fitting gloves to handle the edge.
- Choose the appropriate spokeshave for the profile (flat or curved sole) to maintain control and avoid snags.
- Stop if you notice unusual vibrations, binding or dullness; check the adjustment before continuing.
Storage and maintenance
- After use, remove shavings and resin; dry the tool to prevent corrosion.
- Protect the edge with a sheath or guard and store the spokeshave in a dry, ventilated place.
- Sharpen and hone the blade regularly; replace blades with nicks or cracks immediately.
- Regularly check the tightness of screws and the condition of the handles.
- Apply a light coat of oil to the blade and metal surfaces if it will not be used for some time.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the tool in water.
Restrictions of use
- Not a toy: keep out of reach of children. Use by minors only under adult supervision.
- Do not use on materials other than wood or on workpieces containing nails, staples or screws.
- Do not use the spokeshave as a lever, scraper, chisel or hammer.
- Do not work if the blade is loose, dull or if there is play in the tool.
- Avoid use with loose gloves that could catch; prioritise a firm grip with clean, dry hands.
- Stop the task if you experience pain or fatigue in your hands or wrists and take breaks.
