Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Cuts and puncture injuries from contact with the exposed edge.
  • Unexpected slips if the workpiece is not well secured or due to changes in the wood grain.
  • Flying chips and splinters that can strike eyes and skin.
  • Excessive force and loss of control when the edge is dull.
  • Blows to the hands when using unsuitable mallets or due to poor posture.
  • Handle/ferrule breakage or loosening, with the blade coming free.
  • Edge corrosion that weakens the tool and increases the risk of an accident.

Safe use

  • Before starting, check that the blade, handle and ferrule are secure and free from cracks or looseness.
  • Secure the workpiece with clamps, a vice or a carving bench; work on a stable, uncluttered surface.
  • Keep your hands behind the cutting edge at all times; make cuts away from your body and fingers.
  • Make short, controlled passes. If you need to force the cut, stop and sharpen the gouge.
  • Follow the direction of the grain where possible to reduce catches and slips.
  • Wear safety glasses and, where appropriate, a cut-resistant glove on the hand holding the workpiece. Avoid loose clothing and accessories that could catch.
  • If using a mallet, use the type recommended for gouges (e.g. wood or nylon) and avoid metal hammers unless specified by the manufacturer.
  • When setting the gouge down on the bench, fit an edge guard or rest it on a stable holder, never hidden under shavings.
  • Do not test the edge with your fingers; make a test cut on scrap wood.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store them with a sheath or edge guard, in a case or tool roll that prevents tools knocking together.
  • Remove resin and dust after each use and dry thoroughly to prevent rust.
  • Apply a light film of protective oil to the edge if they will not be used for a while or in humid environments.
  • Sharpen and hone the edge periodically using appropriate methods, avoiding overheating the blade and respecting the geometry specified by the manufacturer.
  • Inspect and replace damaged handles; do not use gouges with loose or cracked fittings.
  • Store in a dry place, out of the reach of children and pets.

Restrictions on use

  • Do not use as a lever, to open containers, or to cut unsuitable materials (metal, stone, ceramics or cables).
  • Do not work near live electrical conductors or on unstable surfaces or at height without securing the tool and work area.
  • Do not modify, heat or regrind the blade beyond what is recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Do not use metal mallets unless specified by the manufacturer.
  • Do not carry in pockets or loose in the toolbox; use a sheath or guard.
  • Do not use if you are fatigued or under the influence of alcohol or medicines that reduce alertness.
  • Use by minors only under the direct supervision of an experienced adult.
