Safety warnings and precautions
Key risks
- Snagging or entanglement with moving machinery, ladders or protrusions due to loose trouser legs, belt loops, drawcords, pockets or dangling accessories.
- Trips and falls due to long hems, tears at the hems, or an ill-fitting size that restricts mobility.
- Skin irritation from sweat, friction or garment dyes, especially during initial wear or in hot weather.
- Burns or fabric melting from sparks, hot spatter or contact with high-temperature surfaces if the garment is not designed for it.
- Cuts or abrasions when working with sharp edges if the fabric tears; standard trousers are no substitute for cut-resistant garments.
- Reduced visibility in traffic areas or low light if the garment is not high-visibility.
- Injuries from excessive pocket loads (tools or heavy objects) that pull at the waist, create imbalance or apply pressure when kneeling.
- Electrical risk from exposed metal components or from carrying conductive objects in pockets in energised environments.
Safe use
- Choose the correct size and adjust fastenings and belt; avoid trouser legs that drag or are overly loose.
- Remove or ensure there are no loose ties, key rings, tool holders or ID tags when working near moving parts.
- Do not overload pockets; distribute the weight and avoid carrying loose sharp or pointed items.
- Fit knee pads correctly if the trousers have pockets for them; check they do not shift before kneeling.
- Keep zips, buttons and Velcro fasteners closed to reduce snagging.
- For work involving heat, electricity, chemicals or cut risk, use trousers specifically designed for that hazard.
- Stop use if you detect open seams, tears, damaged zips or excessive wear in critical areas.
- Avoid exposed metal parts and empty pockets of conductive objects when working near electrical installations.
Storage and maintenance
- Wash according to the care label and, where applicable, before first use; use mild detergents and avoid harsh products that may degrade the fabric or finishes.
- Remove tools or objects from pockets before washing to prevent damage and tears.
- Air dry in a ventilated place, away from sources of direct heat or flames; avoid high temperatures that could shrink or deform components.
- Store the garment clean and completely dry, in a cool place protected from direct sunlight, moisture, oils or solvents.
- Regularly inspect seams, knees, fastenings and high-wear areas; repair properly or replace the garment if the damage affects safe use.
- Remove dust, swarf or debris that may abrade the fabric or cause skin discomfort after the working day.
Restrictions on use
- They do not replace garments specific to particular hazards (e.g., flame-resistant, cut-resistant, high-visibility, chemical-protective or arc-flash-rated) when these are required.
- Do not wear trousers with loose elements near machinery with rotating parts; if they cannot be removed, keep a safe distance.
- Do not modify the garment with cuts, open flames, improvised rivets or dangling accessories that increase the risk of snagging.
- Do not wear an excessively tight or loose size that limits mobility or increases the risk of tripping.
- Do not carry heavy or pointed objects in the pockets while working at height or when operating vehicles and machinery.
- Do not allow use by minors in construction or industrial environments without proper supervision and appropriate protective equipment.
