Safety warnings and precautions
Main risks
- Electric shock when handling the wiring or mechanism while the supply is energised.
- Overheating or fire due to overload, loose connections, damaged cables, or incompatibility with the type of load (e.g., dimmers with unsuitable lamps).
- Short circuits and corrosion due to moisture ingress, especially in bathrooms, kitchens or outdoors.
- Accessible live parts if the faceplate or frame is cracked, loose or poorly secured.
- Risk of sparking, unusual noises or intermittent faults due to mechanism wear or poor installation.
- Impacts, cuts or pinching injuries during installation due to tools or sharp edges.
Safe use
- Before installing, replacing or inspecting a switch, isolate the supply at the consumer unit and verify the absence of voltage.
- Check compatibility with the voltage, current and the type of load to be controlled (dimmable LEDs, halogen lamps, motors, fans, etc.).
- Follow the manufacturer's wiring diagram; observe polarity where applicable, tighten the terminals firmly and avoid leaving exposed copper.
- Use a suitable back box and faceplate; the assembly should be secure, with no play and no sharp edges.
- Do not operate with wet hands or clean while the circuit is energised; use a dry cloth and avoid spraying liquids directly.
- In bathrooms, kitchens or splash-prone areas, use models suitable for that environment and, where possible, locate them outside areas of direct contact with water.
- For smart switches, review the model's connection and configuration requirements and apply the manufacturer's recommended updates.
- If you detect a burning odour, crackling, abnormal heating or erratic operation, cut the power and do not use it again until it has been checked or replaced.
Storage and maintenance
- Store the mechanisms in their original packaging, in a dry, clean place protected from dust, moisture and direct sunlight.
- Avoid impacts and crushing that could deform the mechanism or crack the faceplate.
- Periodically check that screws and frames are secure and that there is no play, buzzing or hot spots after a period of use.
- Clean the surface with a soft, dry cloth; avoid abrasive products, solvents and excessive moisture.
- Immediately replace plates or rockers that are cracked, yellowed by heat or show any signs of deterioration.
- After changes to the installation or to the type of lamps/loads, verify that the switch is still suitable for the intended use.
Restrictions of use
- Do not use the switch with loads that exceed its rated power or current.
- Do not use it outdoors or in very humid or dusty areas unless the model is specifically designed for it.
- Do not use the switch as an emergency cut-off device or as a means of isolation for electrical work.
- Do not modify, bridge or drill the mechanism; avoid improvised spurs or defective joints inside the box.
- Do not install in overcrowded boxes or with damaged conductors; replace any cable with damaged insulation.
- Prevent children from handling the switch during installation or if the faceplate is loose; on building sites, protect open boxes.
- If you do not have experience with electrical work, have installation or replacement carried out by qualified personnel.
