Usage Warnings

Light Diffusers

Safety warnings and precautions

Main risks

  • Overheating when used with continuous lights or high-power flashes, with risk of burns, material deformation or ignition.
  • Equipment falling or tipping due to inadequate attachment to the light or light stand.
  • Pinching or impact injuries during the assembly of rods, frames or umbrellas under tension.
  • Glare or exposure to intense flashes if looking directly at the light source at close range.
  • Indirect electrical hazard when handling the diffuser near mains-powered equipment.
  • Outdoor instability: the diffuser can act like a “sail” in the wind and be blown away.
  • Fire hazard if the diffuser comes into contact with combustible materials or blocks the light’s ventilation.

Safe use

  • Check the diffuser’s compatibility with your light or flash and fasten all latches and mounts until you hear/feel them lock.
  • Maintain a safe distance between the light source and the diffusing surface; do not cover the light’s ventilation slots.
  • Monitor temperature during long sessions; allow it to cool before touching, folding or changing the diffuser. Wear gloves if it is hot.
  • Disconnect power to the light or flash before fitting or removing the diffuser.
  • Stabilise the light stand with counterweights or sandbags and avoid exceeding the stand’s recommended load.
  • Outdoors, avoid using it in strong wind; anchor the setup and close umbrellas or softboxes if there are gusts.
  • Do not look directly at the light source; warn subjects and carry out tests at low power where possible.
  • Keep the diffuser away from curtains, paper or other flammable materials and from liquids or rain.
  • Do not improvise fixings with tapes or fabrics not intended for this purpose, especially near hot lights.

Storage and maintenance

  • Store in a dry, cool, well-ventilated place, away from prolonged direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Ensure the diffuser is completely cool and dry before folding it or storing it in its case.
  • Clean the diffusing surface with a soft, slightly damp cloth and, if appropriate, a mild neutral soap. Avoid solvents, alcohols and abrasives.
  • Protect fabrics and films from forced creases; transport in its case to avoid tears or deformation.
  • Periodically check seams, rods, frames and fasteners. Replace damaged parts and do not use the diffuser if it shows tears or burnt areas.
  • Store diffuser sheets and gels flat or in a tube, away from heat and intense light to minimise discolouration.

Usage restrictions

  • Do not use the diffuser with power levels or temperatures above those allowed by the light manufacturer or by the accessory itself.
  • Do not bring the diffuser close to open flames, heaters or other intense heat sources.
  • Do not use outdoors in rain or damp conditions when electrical equipment is involved.
  • Do not modify, drill or cut the diffuser, nor use attachment systems not specified by the manufacturer.
  • Do not use the diffuser as a rain umbrella, sunshade, curtain, blanket or personal protective equipment.
  • Do not leave equipment switched on unattended when the diffuser is mounted, especially with continuous light.
  • Keep out of the reach of children and pets; ensure supervision during sessions with the public.
  • Remove the diffuser from service if it emits a burning smell, shows extreme discolouration or heat-induced deformation.
