Safety warnings and precautions
Main hazards
- Entanglement with rotating parts (chuck, spindle, toolpost and protruding bars).
- Ejection of swarf and fragments of tool or workpiece.
- Workpiece ejection due to poor clamping or inappropriate speed.
- Cuts from sharp edges, swarf and cutting tools.
- Hot surfaces and swarf after machining.
- Crushing and pinch points at carriages, ways and tailstock.
- Electrical hazard from damaged cables, moisture or improper connections.
- Noise and vibration that may cause fatigue or loss of control.
- Spills of oils/coolants with slip hazard and skin irritation.
- Overexertion when handling heavy parts or moving the machine.
Safe use
- Before starting, secure the workpiece in the chuck or between centres and remove the chuck key immediately.
- Fit and keep guards and screens in place; work with good lighting.
- Select speed and feed appropriate to the material and diameter; start at low speed and check for abnormal vibration.
- Keep hands, tools and clothing away from rotating parts; tie back hair and wear close-fitting clothing; no jewellery or loose sleeves.
- Do not wear gloves during machining; use them only with the machine stopped to remove swarf or handle sharp parts.
- Do not measure, adjust, sand with cloth, or change tools with the spindle running; wait for a complete stop.
- Remove swarf with a brush or hook; never by hand nor with high-pressure air directed at the skin.
- Wear eye protection (safety glasses or face shield), hearing protection when appropriate, and slip-resistant footwear.
- Support long or slender workpieces with the tailstock or a steady; avoid bars protruding behind the spindle without adequate guarding.
- Connect to an earthed socket and disconnect from the mains before adjustments, cleaning or tool changes outside the work cycle.
- If abnormal noise, vibration or heating occurs, stop and inspect before continuing.
Storage and maintenance
- Install the lathe on a stable, level base, in a dry, well-lit indoor area.
- Isolate and lock off the power supply before cleaning, adjusting or maintaining; wait for all moving parts to come to a complete stop.
- Regularly clean the ways, carriages and chuck; remove swarf build-up with suitable tools.
- Lubricate and tension drive elements as per the manufacturer's instructions.
- Periodically check the condition of the chuck, jaws, toolpost, steadies and tailstock; replace damaged or worn parts.
- Check the fastening of screws, guards and screens; keep them clean and free from cracks.
- Keep cables and plugs in good condition; do not use if insulation is deteriorated or connectors are loose.
- Manage coolants and oils in accordance with the product instructions; clean up spills immediately and store in sealed containers.
- Protect surfaces against corrosion with a light film of oil where appropriate.
- Store accessories and keys in assigned holders; do not leave them on the bed.
Restrictions of use
- Use restricted to persons trained in lathe operation; not suitable for minors. Close supervision for inexperienced users.
- Do not use under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or when fatigued.
- Do not operate outdoors, in damp environments, with conductive dust or in explosive atmospheres.
- Do not leave the lathe running unattended, nor perform other tasks while the spindle is turning.
- Do not machine materials that generate hazardous dust or fumes without adequate extraction; avoid unknown materials.
- Do not exceed the clamping capacity of the chuck or toolpost, nor use incompatible or damaged accessories.
- Do not insert gloves, rags or hand tools into the rotating area.
- Do not move or lift the machine without suitable lifting equipment and designated lifting points.
- Installation, commissioning and electrical repairs only by qualified personnel.
