Warnings and safety precautions
Key risks
- Cuts from breakage of the glass or the housing in analogue column models.
- Ingestion or choking from small parts and button cells in digital models; electrolyte leaks.
- Damage to the device due to water ingress or condensation if it is not weatherproof.
- Falls of the device or the user during installation at height or outdoors.
- Glare or eye injury if the model includes a laser pointer.
- Inaccurate readings that may lead to wrong decisions if placed near sources of heat, cold or direct sunlight.
Safe use
- Check the temperature and humidity range and the protection rating stated by the manufacturer before installing outdoors or in damp areas.
- Install the thermometer on a firm, stable surface; use appropriate fixings and avoid locations where it may fall or be knocked.
- Avoid direct sunlight, draughts and proximity to radiators, hobs or air-conditioning vents to avoid affecting the measurements.
- If working at height, use a stable ladder, wear non-slip footwear and avoid overreaching.
- On models with a probe, route and guide the cable without pinching it or running it over sharp edges; keep it away from doors and windows that could trap it.
- When handling batteries, observe polarity, do not mix new and used cells or different types; do not recharge non-rechargeable batteries and avoid short-circuiting them.
- If a liquid thermometer breaks, avoid contact with the internal fluid, ventilate the area and collect the debris with gloves and absorbent materials; do not use a vacuum cleaner or pour it down the drain.
- If the model includes a laser pointer, do not look into the beam or direct it at the eyes of people or animals.
Storage and maintenance
- Store in a dry, clean place protected from shocks and vibrations; avoid extreme temperatures and prolonged direct sunlight (e.g., inside a vehicle in the sun).
- Clean with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth; do not use solvents, abrasives or water jets.
- Check periodically for cracks in the glass or housing, corrosion on contacts, and damage to cables or probes.
- Replace the batteries when depleted or, if the device will not be used for a prolonged period, remove them to prevent leaks.
- After exposure to rain or condensation, dry completely before switching back on.
- For liquid column models, avoid sharp impacts that could separate the column; keep them in a stable position as per the manufacturer's instructions.
Usage restrictions
- Do not use as a medical device or to measure fever; not suitable for food or kitchen use unless explicitly stated by the manufacturer.
- Do not immerse or wash under the tap unless specifically indicated by the manufacturer.
- Do not use in ovens or fireplaces, on very hot surfaces or in environments with open flames unless the model is designed for it.
- Do not expose to atmospheres with aggressive chemical vapours, solvents or conductive dust that could damage the equipment.
- Do not open, modify or drill the housing; any intervention not specified may compromise safety and operation.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets, especially models with button cells and small parts.
